Step Cylinder

Step Cylinder
My entry step in my '82 FC 35 works very "jerkily" and intermitantly.
There is a lot of air leaking towards the back of the step from around
the cylinder. Should I replace the cylinder or is it worth
rebuilding? Any part numbers and sources for rebuild kits or new
cylinder would be appreciated.

Gene you might check a couple of things.

1. For some strange reason the factory could not explain my 1982 FC35 does
not nor has it ever had the two microswitches that turn the step on and
off. Mine has one microswitch that only turns the dash light on and off.
You might check if your coach has the two switches. They will be located on
a vertical part of the step towards the back. One of them has a dual
purpose to turn the light on and off on the dash when the step is extended
or retracted.

3. The two solenoids turn the air off to the air solenoid when the step is
extended or retracted. When you view the two switches (if you have them)
you can tell which is which.

3. You can remove the air soldnoid at the back of the step and take it
apart and clean it thoroughly and then replace the O rings. Put it back
together.

4. . If you have the two microswitches and they are adjusted properly then
your step should work now.

5. If it still leaks and you do not have the two microswitches then you
need to install them. The wiring is easy. If you need help I can tell you
how to wire them.

Step Cylinder
It's a great idea to disconnect the cylinder from the step assembly so you can
cycle it with out the real danger of the step kicking your butt.

Step Cylinder
I do not believe a repair kit is available. I ahd the same problem with my
84 PT 40 last year and I took the numbers off the exixting valve, called a
company that ahndle npnuematic valves and bout a direct replacement for
$110. plus shipping. not at home so cant help by giving info on direct
replacement numbers.

My 82 only has one switch also. There is no retract lock so I would expect
that they would keep air on the cylinder.

Step Cylinder
I have a problem with my step, it will not retract. I have both
switches in the correct position, and full air pressure, and nothing
happens when I close the door. Any suggestions?

Step Cylinder
Jim, On our 88 WB40 we had the same problem and I took the air switch apart and
cleaned/ lube and that seemed to do the trick. At time will not work with low
air, however works good when it gets air.

Some SP36 coaches' steps won't retract if the "electronic master switch" is
in the off position,defaulting it to extended.
