[Scott Forman]

Guys, I am no expert, but I watched the guys do it at the truck wash,
and they didn't use any sandpaper or any other "prep". My wheels
looked awful, bad cloudy. They applied some sort of slurry material
by hand, then buffed it off with a regular paint buffer. I was
floored at the results. Had tried to do it myself and didn't even
make a difference.

I am spoiled here in Memphis, we are the distribution capital of the
nation, the intersection of I-40 and I-55, so there are many truck-
related support places here. If there is not a good professional
truck wash near you, look for one on your next trip. My wheels went
from horrible to mirror shine in about 40 minutes for $32.

No, I did not use sandpaper. It seems that should be my next step.
I really need to take the wheels off to get around the lug area, but
that is another project I am not ready for.

Ow, ouch, everything hurts! I got out the wet sandpaper and worked
on the wheels, most of the day. I couldn't find 1000 so I settled
for 1500 grit. I guess I need to accept that each attempt is only
one step in a slow path to a briliant shine. I worked on three
wheels today, but only one really looks OK. Once I got sick of
sanding I tried a couple of polishing systems, but the reality is I
need to spend more time sanding.

I don't think the wheels have been shined for many years, if ever.
I have been tempted to go below 1000 in grit to get the pits out,
but that may be a bad decision. I guess lots of time and patience
is the only answer.

Something to consider when you are doing your wheels is to keep your
paper lubricated. On aluminum if you dry sand it, it will never get the
shine you are looking for. There is a special polishing oil for this or
you can use something very thin. Try not to use something that will
evaporate.

I polish aluminum for molds so you know my reasons for results.

If you have access to MSC, this is a good source for sanding paper and
many other supplies for polishing. Depends on how bright you want them. As
a finishing touch when I am polishing the wheels is semi-chrome polish. It
will make a so-so wheel shine and it puts a protective coating on. Not the
same as wax, but it helps short term.

I went through this process couple years ago. The sequence was 320, 640,
1000, Tripoli buffing compound, Bluemagic polishing cream, and Busch's
aluminum wheel wax and sealant. Had the rears off all of one winter in the
garage and spent maybe 20 hours on each one (don't do winter sports). Used
air powered 2 and 3 inch orbital sander with the 320 and 640, manual on the
wet 1000 and beyond. The only short cut I know is to pay a pro.

Chuck,
I am not dry sanding, I use water with a bit of dish detergent. I
keep everything wet and the paper seems clean. It is just a lot of
work.
