Spare Parts for Mexico Trip
We are preapring to leave Tuesday from Northern Mexico to within 25
miles of Guatemala. We have done this trip previously but in an almost new Duramax crew cab and a 11.5 ft. slide in. Travelling in the Bird (1988 FC) will be a whole new thing. Lots of space for us and the cat( pet not Cat). I have been preparing for this trip since we bought the Bird. Mechanically I did whatever my Bird needed. Fixed some wiring, changed all the fluids, inspected everything, fixed some gauges, new fridge. I think I have covered all the common spares to bring along: oil filters, fuel filters, full set of belts, rad hose, oil ( SI oil is hard to find), ATF, AF, Sporlan kits and valve, lots of bulbs, new spare on the roof, 2 hydraulic jacks, planks, wiring supplies, ulrasonic leak detector, infrared thermometer, wire tracer, vom, spare relays, lots of wiring supplies, battery drill, tools up to 3/8 drive. You would think we were getting ready for a safari! What have I missed? Anything that no Bird owner should be without? Thanks Bruce 1988 FC35 "La Reina Gitana" |

You will break what ever you don't have a spare of. I vote for a set of fuel
injector lines, I broke them before and they ain't easy to find on the road. Mike : How true it seems like when you carry spare parts they are
never needed. Instead it is some obscure thing that is only available on special order. Bruce 1988FC35 " La Reina Gitana" |

10's and 20's for a traffic stop. Don't hand the Federales a 50 or
$100.00 bill and ask for change. They just look at you and all of a sudden learn enough english to say "Yea right" GregoryO'Connor 94ptRomoland--- |

Spare Parts for Mexico Trip
Greg:
We have never, in over 18 years of travelling and living in Mexico, paid a bribe. Most of the cops are really good. Like in the Southern states some of the small towns have corrupt police. Some big cities are bad as well: Tijuana, Mexico City. We try to follow the strange traffic laws: cannot turn left on a main road that has a lateral. You must enter the lateral and turn left from there. No heavy vehicles on the road if there is a lateral. No jumping amber lights. Of course when stopped we are polite, speak Spanish and stand our ground. So far so good. Besides Mexicans love vehicles that are " Clasicos" Local cops were in my shop/garage last week and drooled over the Bird. When we went south in our Cortez, many years ago, the toll booth attendants wanted to buy her! I will be thinking of all of you and your high priced ULSD as we buy full strength loaded with Sulphur diesel for $1.85!! Bruce 1988 FC35 " La Reina Gitana" |

Spare Parts for Mexico Trip
Hi, Bruce,
Good luck on your trip, seems like you covered the high failure items , I would suggest a spare alternator. Hopeing you have method to get the spare off of the roof and included the lug wrench.
