generator won't stay running?

I have a 12.5 Kolher with a Yanmar motor. From any of the switches
the generator will start but as soon as the start switch is released
it stops. I ran a temporary 12vdc jumper to the fuel solenoid to rule
out the safety shutdowns, same thing, it stops. I watched the voltage
gages while I held the switch in the start position to keep the motor
going. No AC registered on the gages and the radiator fan doesn't
come on either. I've had this problem recently twice before, but it
was intermittent and worked again after that, but now its
consistantly not working.
I checked the archives and have seen that other people have had this
problem, but I couldn't find any solutions.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to get it working before
Maxton!
Does house battery voltage have anything to do with the generator?

p.s. A Kohler dealer e-mailed (pdf file) me the parts manual and
service manuel, which Kinkos put into booklet form for me. If anybody
needs them I can e-mail them to you.

Tom, check the latching ciruit created by an
oil pressure switch. This is a safely device
to prevent running of the engine with no oil.

Bob,
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought running the temp. 12vdc jumper
to the fuel solenoid bypassed that?

Tom: I had a similar, not exactly as you explained, problem. It turned out to
be a failing fuel pump. It was pumping just enough fuel to get it going but not
enough to run. I put a new one on and have been fine since. The overtemp sensor
can shut you down if it is bad. Pull the wire off and see if it runs.

Tom:

The fuel sol is held in by the S/R contacts on the start solenoid. If the
low oil pressure or high water temp shorts to ground ( defective) it is the
same as hitting the stop switch.

Also go under with the gen slid out, remove the rear cover on the Kohler,
there is a fuse and diode on the quadrature windings, check those, Inspect
the brushes and slip rings they ride on and check the L1/L2 and Neutral
wires on the isolated lugs to be sure they are tight. After that you want
to measure at the isolated studs L1 to neutral for A/C while someone holds
the start button. There is an A/C relay in the control box that pulls in
when there is voltage on L1 and Neutral, the A/c relay is the one that sets
up the holding contacts for run. If no voltage, check for 12 vdc on the
brushes. If you have 12 vdc on the brushes then it is a good bet that the
regulator is out.

Had the same problem with the same setup as yours. It was the
brushes. The holder broke and destroyed the stator. Replaced both.

Check and see if you have a fuel bleed valve on the passenger side
of the engine going into the injector pump. If you do, it should only
be open about 1/2 to 3/4 turn. On my unit, the lock nut had vibrated
loose and the valve was fully open and returning all the fuel to the
tank rather than the pump.
