Replacing the pulley on a FC to fix the belt issues

Replacing the pulley on a FC to fix the belt issues
I am going to purchase an 82FC 3208T that has no A/C belt due to what
the owner says was the tendancy for the belt to come off and take the
other belts with it. He mentioned something about using a pulley off a
Mack with 3 v-grooves to replace the 2 groove pulley and routing the
belt differently to prevent the issues.

Anybody out there know more details for this. I would like to get the
parts ordered early and have them ready when I pick up the coach.

Joe Desmond

I have a 1982 35 3208T aftermarket turbo engine installed.I have had no
problems with belts coming off.I have removed my AC dash unit due to
seized compressor bearing. You may want to check that.I updated to a
Horton air fan clutch and updated my power sterring pump.If the
compressor bearings are ok I would take a close look at the alignment
of the pullys with a straight edge.

What did you do to upgrade your power steering pump? What differences did you
notice?

Replacing the pulley on a FC to fix the belt issues
Joe:
My 83FC35 has a single belt to the AC compressor – it is a long one,
prone to bouncing around a bit but like Ken mentioned, I have not had
an issue with it coming off and taking the other belts with it. In
fact, I have driven over 30K miles and never had a problem (with that
belt).

There is a modification some folks have done that involves replacing
the alternator pulley with a three groove and using one of those
grooves to run to the AC compressor – I have chosen not to jump into
that mod for the following reasons – 1) I have not calculated the rpm
difference/required at the compressor and 2) what size pulley (and
magnetic clutch ) one would have to have on the AC compressor to
obtain the correct speed, 3) one would probably have to adjust the
position of the AC compressor to allow the new belt configuration to
properly align with the alternator pulley and 4) then how does on
adjust tension of this belt, probably have to modify the AC
compressor mount to allow for a tension adjustment or mount a tension
idler somewhere. I have chosen to run with the factory
configuration, properly adjusted and aligned, it seems to work
fine. But, properly engineered and installed the mod would be an
improvement over the long bouncy belt.

Replacing the pulley on a FC to fix the belt issues
Joe. I purchased an 82 FC35 a few weeks ago. The A/C compressor on mine looks
brand new,(shiney black) . Although I haven't tried mine yet, it looks like a
York. These compressors weigh a ton, and are prone to vibrate, so it wouldn't
surprise me if that belt did fly off. I'd check the mounts, make sure they're
not cracked, throw a belt on try it out. Just remember that system needs
pressure to kick the clutch on, so make sure it's engauging and not just
spinning the pulley, and if it's seized I'd look into some later model
aftermarket compressor that's half the size and weight. (maybe a rotary model)
I'm not sure if this would work, or if there is a conversion already been done,
but it may be worth checking out. Good luck. Jimmy

Replacing the pulley on a FC to fix the belt issues
I changed the pump because the seal was leaking and I had blown the
seal twice. The original pump has what looks like a bronze bushing
with a lip seal on the out side. The new pump [ RA2X ] has the seal
and a sealed bearing on the outer shaft.I de-rated the by pass relief
to 1750PSI to match the HF64 steering box.It did not change
preformance.

Replacing the pulley on a FC to fix the belt issues
Joe,
I removed the A/C compressor in our FC due to freon leaks in the condenser hoses
and
the estimated cost of updating/repairing a system that wouldn't cool the whole
coach in
Louisiana/Texas summers anyway. I replaced the A/C drive belt with a second one
between the crank and radiator fan. There is a 3208 belt data drawing in the
files section
you may refer to on this change.

Most belt problems I've had on our coach is with the power steering belt
slipping during
low speed turns. I open up the front of the coach to check belts for condition
and tension
annually. This spring, I'm going to look into a two groove pulley for the power
steering
pump to see if it will improve the situation.

Replacing the pulley on a FC to fix the belt issues
Power Steering Specialists in Columbus OH did the pulley up date for my 83. A
new pump shaft is required and a dedicated Blue Bird pulley. OE on 87 and up.
The two belt pulley is 6.5" dia., pump runs a little slower, less likely to
cavitate.

Mike,
Sounds like what I need to do. Did you have to modify pump mount to align the
belts? Did
Power Steering Specialists do the modifications on your pump?
Thanks for the information.
