San Francisco Camping

[Sidney Breese]

We are going to San Francisco for elder son's wedding in early June.
The wedding is at "The Outdoor Arts Club" in Marin County. We are
looking for a good campsite for about 5 days. We will be coming into
SF via I80. I would like to not use a bridge if possible; just don't
like them. Any suggestions for a place to camp? Thanks.

I think KOA has a site in San Francisco but I'm not sure, I would give them a
call. I know down on the peninsula theirs one in Redwood city but that's kind of
long way from San Francisco. You might check with the chamber of commerce about
RV site in San Francisco proper and if your going to up in the Marin county
their are some parks up their. I attached a site that's put out by the Triple A
and I think it has locations for California State parks on their also. Jon

To go from San Francisco to Marin or back without hitting a bridge would
be a trip of at least 250 miles and possibly closer to 300. Each way.
No, I'm not kidding, I'm a Bay Area Brat born and raised. You *cannot*
drive around the SF Bay Area without dealing with bridges.

If you just want to come in to Marin County and back out again it's
SORTA possible except the main road through Marin each have numerous
bridges and flyways (101 freeway, Highway 1, etc.).

Your only option to avoid bridges would be to come in from the east on
Highway 80 from Sacramento but then divert northwest towards Napa
somewhere before you get to Vallejo...then wind "back roads" for about
100 miles over to the 101 in Sonoma County or northern Marin County and
head south to Marin from there. Except the 101 has at least three
pretty serious bridges in Marin County alone. And then to cross into SF
you're dealing with either the Golden Gate bridge (which is a genuine
freakshow because it's two-way traffic separated only by "cones" and
with fairly nasty crosswinds) OR you take the San Rafael bridge from the
101 in Marin to Richmond, go south on I80 to the Bay Bridge in Oakland,
cross into SF that way...it's longer but both the San Rafael and Bay
bridges completely separate traffic in each direction and there's less
wind issues.

My advice regarding the whole bridge issue: get over it except that if
bridges freak you out, the Golden Gate will flat-out terrify you...I can
see skipping that scene but it's not too nasty to divert around it.

I just stayed in Pacifica, CA (10 min. south of downtown SF for 3 days. It
was a pretty nice place se on a cliff overlooking the ocean ($56/ night) .
Anyway the reason I am writing is to also say that I used the bay bridge
going into the city and the Golden Gate when heading north. It's really just
a matter on timing. People are entering the city in the morning and leaving
at night so other times bridge traffic isn't very bad. That is if your in
the right direction. Did that make any sense?

Hi Sid,

What I do when having to go to that area is to take CA 37 off I-80 at
Vallejo over to US 101. There are some small bridges but nothing like
the Golden Gate or Bay Bridges. Also no toll booths to worry with.
They can be a bit tight to get through. I have been across all of them
with various Motorhomes and it is doable but if you would rather not,
then CA 37 is the better route. Less traffic also. None of these
bridges is as bad as some we ran into on the east coast.

BTW, we have traveled this route in our 42' WBWL and it was no sweat.

You didn't say what town the wedding will be in. Assuming that you
will either be towing or renting a car, consider the fairgrounds at
Petaluma.

It looks like the wedding is in Marin City. I looked at the Route 37
way and thought that might work. Glad to know its doable. Are the
fairgrounds in Pealuma listed somewhere. Have looked at a park in
Olema near the national forest. Anyway, thanks for the advice about
bridges. Don't think I'll try the Golden Gate, but maybe the Bay
Bridge. BYW we are looking forward to this adventure. My wife will be
performing the ceremony and its the longest trip we have every taken
in our Bird.

Agree.....take 37 over to 101 and then North to Novato... There is a real
nice RV park
just off Belvedere Exit to the right of the highway. Stay away from any
RV parks south
of Novato.....(I think there's only one anyway, and that's in Greenbrae,
and it's a dump)
You do not want to take the coach into Marin proper....use your toad. The
roads are
narrow, busy, irritating, and full of liberals who hate anything that looks
like money, especially
when it's not their's.

We lived there for 30 some years and never go back....
