coolant sensor
My coolant sensor may be acting up as the DDEC is returning a code of
low coolant. However, when I check the coolant level it is okay. The
only sensor I find is the one on the coolant reservoir. Is there
another one on the radiator in a PT40, 475 HP?? If so, where is it and
how do I get to it??

Gene:

Are you sure that is the only code you are receiving? I had that
problem last year. Nothing wrong with the coolant, but I had a leak
right above my oil pressure sending unit that had a hole in the
plastic cap from a loose compressor belt rubbing on it. I couldn't
see that code, but when we hooked up the code reader, there it was.
Take it by a dealer and check with the reader.

Ron, I am not receiving any other codes-always the 1-3 that reads lo-coolant
sensor. I
note that when I overfill the coolant reservoir the engine light does not come
on as often
but because the reservoir is so full, I lose the coolant and have to overfill it
again if I
want the keep the engine light from coming on so often. The oil pressure sending
unit
was replaced on June 7, 2004 so I don't think that it is the problem as
everything looks
fine there. Any other ideas you might have is certainly welcomed. Missed you at
the
Kerrville Rally.

Gene: No other ideas other than take it to a shop that has a reader
and have it checked. Simply clearing all the codes past and present
might just solve your problem.

Ron , is there a way to clear the codes myself. Stewart & Stevenson is the
only place I know of that has the means to read the original DDEC and they
charge
an arm and a leg here in Houston. Thanks,

Gene: I had about the same problem a few years back on my 93pt. I
would get the low coolant flash code and also about the same time I
would get the check transmission light flashing when I would go from
bright to dim on the head lights. I bought tuner spray cleaner and
took
the cannon plugs lose and cleaned them well. I then went completely
over every ground strap on the coach. also added a extra one next to
the one on top of the transmission. After doing all that I have not
had
one problem with false code's or lights. It also corrected my
speedometer from running about 15mph standing still. Bob 93pt40

Hi Gene,

I am having the same problem with the low coolant code as yourself. I
have to overfill the tank to stop it from happening. I usually get the
check engine light flash when going up a long slope. I have not been
able to put my finger on the problem as of yet. If I find the cause I
will let you know. I do not think that clearing the code will solve
your problem. I have already tried that.

Andy, thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention in my post that my engine light
also comes on more often when I am climbing a long hill. Must be something
that is common with the 88 PT 40's. Hopefully between the two of us we can find
a solution to this problem and will not have to keep over filling the coolant
reservoir.
