Headlight relays 86 PT?
Did the 86 PT come with headlight relays? My blue box diagrams show
them, but voltage at my headlights is low. If these relays are there, where are they? Scott Forman 86 PT38 |

Scott,
Look behind the drivers side front panel. The headlight system should be upgraded. I forwarded upgrade information to you. It's the same information that is on the forums. So you are saying that the 86 does not have them? I have the front
panel open, there are many relays in there, but my diagrams aren't very specific about them. I also cannot find the headlight wiring to add the relays, where can I get to it? If there is a relay I think it would be behind that door. I looked at my
'87 drawing and I do not see a headlight relay. So maybe there isn't one. What I'm saying is to upgrade your headlight system. Did you receive the information I sent to your personal email? Headlight relays 86 PT?
Mission accomplished. Was able to access the headlight wiring by
removing the entire headlight bucket assembly on the driver's side. Installed relay right there with wire run to load center for power. Works perfect now! Headlight relays 86 PT?
Scott,
I added the relays to my BB, since I only had about 10-11v to the lamps. Now I have 13-14V with the relays. If my BB had relays, I never saw them, and assumed no because of the low voltage...I listened for the usual relay click before the upgrade, and all was quiet. Oh well...they work great now. Yes...but there is a method to my madness.
I rarely use high-beams, so I did not relay them. In addition, I had a relay fail in my old FC, which left me without lights relying on my driving lights for illumination. With these two factors in mind, I installed the relay on my low-beam only. If it ever fails, I can still use my non-relayed (dim) high beams to get me home. Scott,
There is a diagram on my photo web site, with a four relay headlight modification which will solve the issue of just relying on one single relay for your headlights, it will give you a relay for each light. You can find it through the link in my signature below. I recommend using the four relay setup, this is a lot safer method in my opinion. I do not recommend using just one Bosch relay for all of the headlights, they are not designed for that. They will work OK with one relay for the High beams and one relay for the Low beams. If it was one of my Bosch relays that went bad for you, please let me know and I will send you a new one to replace it. Headlight relays 86 PT?
John,
Wasn't your relay, came from JC Whitney. I now have one relay for low beams and no relays for high. On my FC, I had one for low and one for high, and that set-up worked fine after the failure. I just don't need high beams that much, so I'm not worried about adding the relay for them. I can always go back and add one if I need to.
