I read an email today or perhaps yesterday about removing the drivers seat and
rolling back carpet to get to steering box thru an opening. I have tried to find
the email for a very long time but have not been able to call it up.

I wonder if the plate that holds the seat is the opening discussed. This is not
under carpet but has four bolts. Would this opening wherever it might be be the
same for an 80fc? Thanks Maury 8-0fc 31'

Maury,

On my '81 I have had that space open three times now; hope never to do it
again.

When you pull back the carpet, there may or may not be carpet insulation
underneath. If there is, remove it also;

To the right and a little behind the steering column, you should see a piece
of aluminum sheeting about 3" X 6" held in by four sheet metal screws. If you
remove this, you can plainly see the top of the steering box. You can inspect
your hose connections from here and you can also inspect the two top bolts that
hold the steering box in place. This is the ONLY way you can assure these bolts
are tight.

It is NOT fun job. Good luck.

Tom,Thanks for the info. Was the remembered quote of yours correct -ie that
after tightening the nut on the top of the box that your steering problem was
fixed? Maury 80fc 31'

Might be a good idea to remove the captains chair.

Hi Chuck, we have performed many surgeries on birds. And we know the
limitations of a large body, mine-versus a small area.

It makes it easier if you unplug the electrical and air from the seat,
looses the swivel lock and lift the seat up and lay it back in the couch.
This gives you a lot more room to work.

Maury,

It's like anything else on our birds. The first time into an item takes
some time as you figure out how to get at it and what tools you need. After
that it is fairly easy. It takes me about 20 minutes to get to the
steering, brake light switches, or hydraulic controls and about the same
time to put it back together. If you want to call me I can give you a
quick step-by-step. I actually pull the captain's seat and the steering
wheel just to make it easy. I have done it in my good clothes when I was
still working and dropped the bird off to have the steering rebuilt. I
didn't want to pay the shop time for them to figure how to get to it or take
a chance on things being damaged.
