Any 'Lodge PT/WBs with Jake Brakes?
I have the Jake on my 8V92TA and it does help slow the coach some. A person
standing will not stumble because of the sudden decrease in speed but as the transmission downshifts it becomes more noticeable. Descending Mount Eagle in TN it was very helpful controlling the speed, I used the brakes 2 times, first at the crest to bring the speed down to 50 and the second time was near the bottom, 3 gear at 50-55 MPH. With the exhaust 40 feet behind me and facing rearward the rumble is not very noticeable unless there is something for the sound to bounce off. Wonder if it made more noise if the mind would think it is working better? Opinions vary, but one (non BB) 8V92 w/Jake owner I know (he reads here but doesn't post) says he could get about the same amount of slowdown by putting his hand out of the window into the breeze. Compression brakes on a 4 stroke like the Series 60 make a huge difference, but on an 8V92 every stroke is already a compression stroke, so all you can do is increase the time under compression. Hi, How many of you Wanderlodge PT and WB owners have Jake Brakes on your Detroit Diesel Silver 330 (1982-84 6V-92TA), Silver 350 (1985- 89 6V-92TA), Silver 475 (1986-89 8V-92TA) or Silver 500 (1990-95 8V- 92TA)? Jake Brake is the trademark of Jacobs Vehicle Systems for compression-release engine brakes. Its initial development was started in 1931 by Clessie Cummins (the founder of Cummins Engine Co.), and handed down to his nephew Don Cummins, son of Clessie's brother Deloss. The elder Cummins was looking for a way to bring his heavy-duty diesel trucks to a stop without excessive engine wear. 30 years on, the official Jake Brake compression-release engine brake entered production. Jake Brakes make a machine gun sound (roughly: RAT-A-TAT-TAT-TAT) as you apply them. Its loudness depends on the exhaust system type and how well it is maintained. It was this aspect that caused many cities to ban the use of Jake Brakes in certain parts of the town. But not all Jake Brakes sound like this, though. The RAT-A-TAT-TAT- TAT sound would refer to the compression-release Jakes, not the exhaust ones. ~Ben [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] --- End forwarded message --- [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

I agree. Had a Newell w/ 8V92 but the Jake brake was better than nothing. The
3-stage Jake on my LXi automatically downshifts to 4th.Brad Barton 00LXiDFW bbartonwx@... The rough estimate for the valve train retrofit was $10,000. I am getting
another estimate from a local shop. I'll let you know when I get that one. Any 'Lodge PT/WBs with Jake Brakes?
Larry,
The engine brake works fine once I got accustomed to keeping the RPMs above 1,500. It wont leave any tire marks when engaged but I had the coach down many steep grades out West where I would have had to stop to cool down the trans/retarder. Eisenhower and Vail passes had some of the longest downgrades but I only had to put a little retarder every couple miles to keep speeds comfortable. Also just exiting interstate highways using retarder and "Jake brake" eliminated using foot brake till a short distance before light/stop sign. I would expect your 8V92 would perform noticeably better with two more cylinders pumping. Any 'Lodge PT/WBs with Jake Brakes?
Thanks again for the reply. For those who asked I received my bid from
Transdiesel today. $9,300 to install a Jake brake on my 8v92 DDEC II, parts and labor. Parts are $5,300. It requires a valve cover change and reprogramming the ECM amoung other things. It isn't something that I care to try myself. I've been doing fine as is.
