Engine Alternator overcharging
I am having a problem with my Leece-Neville alternator overcharging. I
had it rebuilt as preventive maint.,it woked ok for about 800-1000 miles then it started over charging 15-15.5 volts & 80-100amps. I took it back to the rebuilder and they said the regulator was bad so they replaced it. They told me to check the voltage to the small + post under the regulator. I was getting about .75 of a volt less than battery voltage as measured at the big + post. I could not find where the volt drop was so I ran a new wire from the ignition operated solinoid above the throttle pedal. The alternator is still overcharging. We are supposed to leave on Friday for a 4000 mile trip so this is a big problem. Did Bluebird use a special regulator since they have Batt. power to the alternator all of the time? The rebuilder may have installed the wrong regulator. Thanks Jim Matus 84FC35 Rescue CA |

Try jumping the alternator's sense wire to the battery positive terminal.
Your sense wire might be disconnected or degraded resulting in high resistance. I did that and it charged ok but after I hooked it up with the sense
wire it started overcharging and now it overcharges no matter how you connect it so I guess the regulator blew again. Have you checked all grounds on the coach (battery, frame, etc?)
Insecure grounds can do strange things to apparently unrelated components. Sorry for this Jim, but I gotta ask, was the engine running when

The reading I gave you was with the engine shut off. + post to
alternator frame I thought that is what you wre asking . With the engine running I was getting 15+ volts on the dash volt meter and the alternator was getting very warm. Engine Alternator overcharging
No the way the question was asked I thought he was asking about the
voltage thru the frame to ground with the engine off. Running @ 1500+ rpms it is 15+ volts. I called Leece-Neville this morning and they told me to try Norm's Electric in Sacramento I took it to them and the first thing they saw was that the previous shop had used a no name regulator. I suspect they used substandered off-shore parts in it. I should know tomorrow what all they found.Jim Matus 84FC35 Rescue CA - -- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, David Brady wrote: > > Sorry for this Jim, but I gotta ask, was the engine running when > you read the 12.32V? > > David Brady > '02 LXi, Smokey > NC > > jim matus wrote: > > > > Chuck: The voltage is 12.32 volts same as battery voltage.
