Bridge Education
Leroy, I love to drive some of the back roads. But since my coach and
trailer weigh soooooo much, I believe my adventures are better off with just my toad, keeping the coach nice and cool located in a campground. Bridge Education
I have driven the mountains out West for years having lived there but never in a
Bird. We decided to take the weekend and hit the bunny hills of NE Alabama specifically Guntersville Mountain and Lake. No WiFi, no TV, no cell service. It was fun, like the good old days. Uneventful on the ten mile climb up. Until, I punched in the closest exit in the GPS. The other road down to Albertville. The first event was a 3 mile climb straight up in second gear at 15mph on a tiny mountain road. The bus did great. Then I figured no problem because I knew the drop from there was about 10 miles and the retarder was working fine. Oops! The sign says, "weight restricted bridge ahead." That can't be good because there ain't no turning around. Got lucky, it was two one lane bridges about 100 feet apart with 24 ton capacity, over a deep gorge. That made my @#$ bite the seat. I found out later today that locals call them "Double Bridges" and many bike riders do not venture where I ventured today. I will be certain to consider the longer way home next time and consider the possibility of bridges. It never enter my mind. We were up to New Brunswick our 1st time out and our GPS put us in
front of a bridge that was 11' high with a 6 ton weight limit. Of course we're 12.5' high and over 50,000 lbs wet. Luckily, no traffic and we were able to back it out of there without incident. Lesson learned: Stay on the interstates as much as possible. Ron & Ruth 2000 LXI, summering in Minnesota |

Bridge Education
Hi,
When I turn on my Garmin GPS system it asks if I am driving a car, truck or bus. I always put in bus when using the GPS in the coach. I am hoping it takes that choice into account and doesn't put me on roads with low underpasses, bridge restrictions, etc. but I try to stick to main roads as much as possible. The same thing happened to us on a tiny mountain road in NE Alabama three weeks
ago. We could not turn around but got lucky with two consecutive one lane 24 ton weight restricted bridges over a gorge. It still makes you pucker up. I plan to stay closer to the major highways and take the car on excursions. This brings up a question -What do truckers use to avoid similar problems? I
discovered a GPS intended for the trucking industry but it was not clear from the description whether clearance and weight restrictions were included in the database. Thanks! They use a Truckers Map Book which gives all the truck routes and
warnings. You can purchas one at just about any majoy truck stop. R.E. I have a Garmin also. I think it is a 630 Model. I'll have to look. I have not
seen that prompt on mine. What Model is yours? Leroy Eckert 1990 WB-40"Smoke N Mirrors" Niceville, FL Royale Conversion ---- Original Message ----- From: randymerri@...
