Air Bag Replacement
Took the bus to the shop to have some air and brake repairs done. Bus
leans to one side and can hear air leaking, more like spewing out from the rear wheel area. I have an extra air bag but the shop guy thinks it is for the front. Are the front and rear bags different? I am also having one of the rear brake chambers replaced..when I apply the brake it blows air all over the ground. Real fun drive over to the shop in the rain having to use the Jake brake to slow down then use parking brake to hold bus at stop lights!!! Also learned that anti lock brakes were not standard equipment on 83 Wanderlodges....It sure does like to slide on wet roads when you have to slam on the brakes~!~ Very scary drive I must say ( I know I should not joke about something as serious as almost rear ending a Cadillac with a bus )....will be nice to have proper working brakes and a level riding coach. He wants to charge $150.00 to replace the brake chamber..does that sound right? He will also adjust everything else...sounds fair to me.... I have the same model and did that aweful of replacing every bag on the coach a couple of months ago. The front bags are part #8992 and the rear part # 9039 on mine. The rears are noteable larger than the front. Don't no much about the repair cost you are asking about, but low three digit figures for anything sounds better than thousands. Guys
Has any one ever changed an airbag on a BB ? Is it a tough job or more of a PITA? Any advice /hint etc is greatly appreciated Juergen in PA 1991 WLSP36 |

Jergen,
Tough job or PITA...PITA from my experience. I'm not familiar with the '91 SP, but changing the air springs should be about the same as our '87 PT38. Yes, the air springs can be changed at home. There are write ups on the forums that discuss what needs to be done to properly support the frame(s), etc. Just be CAREFUL! I opted to use a card like TTS's to change our air springs. I felt a whole lot safer letting the local shop do the work. I don't mind getting under the coach but properly supporting the frame is what scares me. Good luck. Air Bag Replacement
I replaced the front air bags on our FC shortly after we bought it. It was a
pretty dirty job but not terribly difficult. Getting them unbolted from the frame was tedious since they have long bolts with self locking nuts and not much room to turn them in. Also had to disassemble part of the exhaust system to get the driver side bag out. SP configuration would be different on exhaust and probably not a problem. Definitely not something I would attempt on the side of the road. Job would be easier if working over a grease pit rather than on your back as I did. I was later told, by Wanderlodge technical support at a RIV,that it's OK if you see some cracks in the outer rubber covering of the bags and it doesn't mean they need to be replaced. Bad sign is seeing inner fabric layer. When you see that, it's time to replace.
