What is this thing?
Under the right front corner of my FC, there is a silver cylinder about
the size of a coke can. There are two hoses comng off it, one goes into a 'T' that goes into the radiator, the other goes around the front of the engine and enters the left side of the block just in front of the bell housing. What is this thing? The little hose coming from the rad has a slit and needs to be replaced. When I loosened the clamps, coolant began to leak. Is the full contents of my cooling system going to come out if I remve this hose? Scott Forman 82 FC35RB Memphis |

hi ... what you may be looking at is a heater for the rad fluid. had
one on my bus and it didnt work so i removed it. just something else to leak or break. i live is louisiana so i saw no need to replace it. ed and peggy 35 ft rear bath "lonesome dove" |

That's your electric pre-heater for the engine. The switch that turns it on is right in front of the passenger's feet. It looks like a light switch you'd see on the wall, but it lights up red when it's on. A whole bunch of coolant will eventually come out, because that's one of the lowest places in the whole cooling system. ;o) Mine quit working and I replaced it with a 2,000 watt unit from NAPA. Works great. My guess, and it's only a guess! A pressure reducer that goes to the bulk oil fill. Ryan, I would go with pressure regulator if it is routed to the bulk
oil??? Have you tried to tighten up the 4 screws?? looks like it was off and rebuilt recent. may be time for a new one. Take care to first remove the bell shaped nut holding the airline. the lines get brittle with all the heat back there. If you must replace the metal air line, the plastic stuff is way tough but I wonder about the heat. It is a Pressure Protection Valve. There should be some part numbers located on the 'cap', which, in this picture, is located underneath. It is probably the same ones used between the air tank and the spring brakes. Those are Midland part #N15759C (N157590) BB part #0522508. This has been replaced by the Haldex KN31000, available at napa for aprox $38. Or online for less: http://tinyurl.com/24ngm4 I do not have the bulk oil fill on my Bird, so I can not check, but I had the diaphragm rupture on one of mine last week, (for the drive axel spring brakes). It opens at 65psi, and closes at 45psi, and it protects the air system from loss of pressure. On the 3 used on the 3 axels, I believe the application is different, they keep us from releasing the brakes until we have at least 65psi, and close down if air pressure drops below 45psi(?) Perhaps someone else will jump in here and confirm this applications use, since a failure could be critical(?) I begin to suspect that the diaphragm material is cracking in all of them from age(?) Just to correct my previous post, I have found 2 Pressure Protection
Valves, (I do not have the bulk oil fill), and they are used in the Ridewell air spring suspension system, not the air brake system. I am unsure if they regulate the air pressure, or protect it from air loss, or perhaps either or both, depending on how the ports are connected(?) The specs say that the valve opens at 65psi, and closes at 45psi. I started another thread under 'Pressure Protection Valves', to share my expirence with the forum, and perhaps clear this up. I do believe the diaphragm material is hardening and failing...
