Drifting Tachometer
I have noticed recently that my tachometer is drifting from 600 to
around 1000 rpm at idle. It does this without any increase in engine speed and it does it randomly. I have not driven it any significant distance recently to notice if it does it on the road. Any ideas? All information is appreciated. Gus 89pt40 8v92t Houston, Tx |

Drifting Tachometer
My tach is still acting up, after 2 yrs or so of erratic behavior. It all started after pressure washing my motor. I thought it was just a wet connector on the sending unit, so I cut/spliced the connector, and the problem still exists. I thought about replacing the sending unit, but they are kind of costly (a used one was something like $90??). Maybe try disconnecting the sending unit all together, and see if you still get the weird readings....if so, your sending unit is probably OK, and the issue is probably with either the gauge itself, or perhaps a bad ground.
I've kind of gotten used to the sometimes yes/sometimes no tachometer, and keep a fine tuned ear to the running motor. I'm interested to what you fix will be...keep us posted.

Drifting Tachometer
Hi Gus
My tachometer was doing that when I started it up to come south in Dec. but when I got out on the road it started working right. It hasn't given me any trouble since then. I hope it isn't getting ready to quit working. Mine does the same thing. What I do unscrew the wiring cap off the sending unit and pack it with grease that takes care of the problem for a few months.
