Pre trip tool
I may be the last to see this but that does not diminish my 'amazement
at the value' and 'fear of the intrusion' of the tool I went to google maps to look at an arial view of a realeastae listing of interest. To my surprise a small pic of the home taken from the street showed up. I clicked the thumbnail pic and was given the tools to walk down the street turn corners and rotate the camera 360deg. I entered my home address and too was able to see and walk the streets . I clicked "STREETS" ( their is a glitch where you must close Googlemaps and reopen it for another search??) The tool is so manuverable that I was able to walk pass a tree that was blocking the view of a truck on the side of my house , spinn the camera and identify that the truck belonged to a contractor who worked in my house 4 months ago. I used the tool to ;measure access for a project by scaling a fence comparitive to a standard garage door ;check for the ability to turn my rig in a residential area; and qualify my interest in makeing a sales call to an address. I can see that it might help qualify or add credability to a ebay purchase trip or help presight a RV Park. I can also see that it could be used to harm. This is way cool, may save someone a trip , fuel and money GregoryO'Connor 94ptRomoland |

Google Maps works great. Try Virtual Earth.

I was amazed to find the same for my address. Someone has done a lot of driving and taken a lot of photos. My address, too, was obviously taken last fall/early winter -- as my coach wasn't in front of my house -- so it was done while I was out of town.
Google maps doesn't have my mother-in-law's home in the foothills outside Golden Colorado. It will be interesting to see if/when it appears.

Greg,
I've tried, but can you tell me how to access that tool that lets you walk down the street etc... All I can get is an arial view. We are looking at property far away and this would be very useful. T.S.
Go to Google maps to the top you should see "street view". Not all areas are covered. If the area is covered on the US map a camera icon shows, zoom in and the streets are highlighted in blue. Here's a link to a description of how they do it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_view And another showing one of the cars they use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Googlecar.png Basically, they mount a tripod with a bunch of video cameras looking in all directions on the roof of a car. Then, they just drive around with the cameras rolling. I think it's a neat technology. Privacy concerns are unfounded; if you're in a place that is clearly visible from the street, you have no expectation of privacy. I've been using Google Maps for years to plan trips. The tool is invaluable. -Ryan |

That car should be shipped to Afganistan. Might find Bin Laden plus keep it out of my part of the woods, ya know.

Checking a couple of addresses, I can see that the "street view" is not available at all locations, yet. This feature initially covered 'business districts' and now has been expanded to some residential areas.
Apparently my home was photographed 4 or 5 months ago -- I can see where the house sitter left the garbage cans... Pete Masterson '95 Blue Bird Wanderlodge WBDA 42 El Sobrante CA "aeonix1@mac.com" On Mar 30, 2008, at 3:15 AM, thomas_sorrentino wrote:
