Thanks for all your comments. It appears the majority of you think it would be a
bad idea to go the whole way on CA 1. Come to think of it, I do remember some hairy moments with my family on that road and we were only pulling a 15 ft travel trailer -- and it was in the 60's when there was a lot more shoulder than there is now. I think I'm going to take Pete's advice and do the combo of 1/101. I love this forum. How does Ca highway 1 compare to the road up to Pikes Peak? I was a
passenger in a pickup and really glad I wasn't driving (scared to death)? I had a friend who drove his brother in laws SUV on Ca 1 and he said he was pretty uneasy in that. He had never been to Pikes Peak so I wander how the two compare? I don't think you could get a BB up Pikes Peak, I know my ole girl wouldn't do it. I have not been to Ca yet but it's a goal and hopefully soon. John Heckman central Pa 1973 FC > > Thanks for all your comments. I bought my F350 in Denver in 1998, and it's "break-in cruise" was a trip up Pikes Peak with the turbo singing the whole way.
I had done it previously in a little rental car in 1983, and would never do it without a turbo again. Normally aspirated engines just don't suck nearly enough for Pikes Peak That being said, if my FC35 had a turbo, I'd take it up there... It's only 13 feet longer than my F350 Dorn Hetzel 77FC35 Hogansville, GA On Fri, May 23, 2008 at 1:05 PM, bubblerboy64 <"jehdds@hotmail.com"> wrote:

CA 1: less up/down grade, longer, more turns, not many true switch backs.
CA 1 follows the coast line very closely. At the numerous rivers (and little ravines), the road ducks back a few hundred yards inland, crosses the creek or whatever, then swings back out to the shore -- these are often fairly tight-radius turns. It runs along cliffs about 200-300 feet above the actual surf line much of the way. There are newer stretches that are built inland a short way, and other stretches that dance along the cliff edge with breathtaking effect. There was a "Modern Marvels" episode on the History Channel about the building of the highway. See: <http://www.history.com/shows.do?action=d...eId=299532> -- it's probably included in the "best of MM" CD collection. I didn't see the individual episode in a brief search.
