Genset regulator

Regarding my 15KW generator in my 97 WL,
Both voltmeters are pegging the gauge and I am assuming from talking to the Power Tech folks that the voltage regulator needs changed.
I am quite certain it is inside the circuit breaker box behind the valve cover and air box.
Can anyone confirm this?

Yes it is Fred. Remove the air box and associated piping and don't lose those rubber strips under the air box. They protect against vibration wear.

Fred, powertech are 'R&R thinking'their troubleshooting/repair
technique lack the insight the unit build design has. Not that I
know a volt from an amp. I'm still pissed about Robs issue with PT.

With the high ambient heat BB spec'ed into the build, I would use
the same exact VR to replace.

??? is the pegged voltmeter symptom duplicated when you start the
genset unhooked to shore power? could 'transfer switch' have been
the cause of the resulting voltage regulator failure????

Fred,

You are correct, the regulator is inside the box.

I had mine replaced by PowerTech at the factory a couple of years ago.
The tech changed it with the genny just extended. Not the asiest job,
but also not the hardest.

Gregory,

The meters only pegged with the genset running and is ok with shore power.

I experienced a problem at Quartzsite this January and it went away until yesterday, but Ihad ordered a new regulator from PowerTech as soon as we got homefrom the Q rally.

This morning I replaced it and was able to figure out the newwiring processwith help of the paperwork that came with the regulator and it works fine except I need to adjust the voltage before Ican put it back together.

The new regulator is a vast improvement over the OE unit.

It appears that I have successfully accomplished the repair, but yes it was a little difficult to get to and to rewire.

When I pulled out the old regulator the case was cracked and swollen from heat.

The new unit had heat sinks to help cool it.

Fred, can the heat sink part be mounted on some steel that extends
outside of the compartment? if it is mounted on hot metal, it would
be a heat wick?????
