blown down the street hitting news van after news van. They work you

I agree that the media makes everything into major events, but given
the fact that it was a category 4 when it crossed Cuba and was huge in
area when it hit the Gulf, the media should have ignored it? Wolf cry
and prudence are two different things. The families of the people
that died probably don't think it was a false alarm.

The fact that the Gulf Coast dodged a big one doesn't make it a false
alarm or non-event, not when coastal areas outside of NOLA got hit
hard and hundreds of thousands are without electricity and will be for
many days. It could have just as easily been a cat 4 or 5 when it hit
land. Looked like even one more foot of storm surge on those levees
might have written an entirely different story.

People that left for the holiday weekend were prudent.

The Media hardly ever gets it right, mostly because they lean to the

I remember Hurricane Albert back in the early 90's in S. Florida, Hey
no big deal.

My folks had a house in Miami 57th Ave. & 8th. St.. Nothing happened,
the potted plants on the door step did not even tip over!

5 miles south some damage, 10 miles south bad damage, 15 miles south
DEVESTATION! Homestead, Redlands, parts of Kendall, these places were
leveled as if the hand of god had wiped off the face of the planet.

This was Hurricane damage, not flood damage as in N.O.LA.

No one knows what a Hurricane will do once it gets to your doorstep.
Rain, Wind, Tornadoes, Flooding, Lightning, these girls have it all!

The more people that encroach up these areas that are prone to
natural phenomena's, whatever type you choose, if they do not
prepare for that eventuality, there will be consequences. You make
your choices and you take your chances.

I'm happy that it was not as bad as anticipated, people took it
seriously, finally, that's a good thing.

When one becomes complacent and takes on the attitude of "It won't happen
to me," A serious re think is needed.

We live in the tornado alley, and the twister that turned into a CAT 5 and
took a swathe of one mile wide through OKC actually started just south of
our home in Lawton, at the time, about 10 miles. It jumped our home (who
knows why) and set back down about 5 miles North and then did it's worst.
Had we known it was going to happen, you bet we would have ran, not walked
to a place that was not there. Thing is there was no time for any sort of
notice at all, it was just there out of the blue. Those who have notice
needs to remember that the weather adversaries are not made for the heck of
it. As to the media, well they sell air time or papers don't they?! A baby
rattler is just as deadly as the grownup version, pay heed.

Well, we survived the hurricane. Thanks to everyone that offered
shelter. Next time, we are going to take up someone on that offer.
The Quonset style building was great, and I parked my pickup
against the door(on the inside), so the door(the weak spot) wouldn't
move.
Lost electric at about 8:30AM Sun. Got to love La., hot and
muggy.
Spent that nite with nature. Not enough ventilation to run the
generator. After the wind died some and the rain did the same, I
pulled it out and started the genny. It's hard to realize how
spoiled we are. The A/C felt great, and to be able to take a hot
shower,was wonderful. Power was restored at about 2:30PM today(Wed),
and I was able to shut the generator down, and go the house. Thank
you Blue Bird, the gen ran 69hrs without a hicup and it's got over
7000hrs on it. Used about 1qt of oil.
The area here looks like a war zone without bomb craters. Trees
and limbs down everywhere. Some trees lost their tops(twisted off
from the wind). One of my pines(a 100footer), went through my
neighbor's shed.
We had sporadic phone and internet service.
Needless to say, we had fun! Also, this was the first hurricane
that I didn't have to report to work.
