Throttle cable
I'm looking for a throttle cable for a 1988 FC. Bluebird had one that
was supposed to be sent to me, however, apparently someone threw it
away instead of selling it to me!(at least that,s what we were told
after waiting two weeks and calling almost daily)
Does anyone know where I might find one? Any help will be appreciated.

THere was quite a discussion on this cable a while back. Bill Pape
should be able to provide the info you need. Apparently they are no
longer available. I think there are companies who can custom build a
cable. We have an 88 FC and I pray the cable will last!!

I don't know the difference between our 82 and a 87, but I replaced the throttle cablefrom Teleflex #CC633XX with 10-32 threaded ends. (XX= the length in inches) I had to order it through a marine store since Teleflex will not sell directly to end users.

Throttle cable
Ray,

About one year ago I replaced my accelerator cable on our 83 FC (not to be
confused
with throttle cable that is a different cable running along steering column). If
you are
talking about the accelerator cable, this is the one I had to replace. It was a
horrible and
expensive fix for me.

At the time Blue Bird told me 3-4 weeks to get one. Below is an excerpt from
the
discussion thread at WOO detailing my experience.

If I were to do it again I would call every Blue BIrd Bus distributor until I
found one. The
various distributors do not communicate well with each other. I first called my
local
(Augusta ME) facility and because they did not have it I assumed all did not.
Not so. I
finally got one (with a Blue BIrd Tag on it) from a third party and was charged
too much
for it. They had me over a barrel.

"BIRD FLEW IN SNOW TODAY AFTER COSTLY SEARCH AND RESCUE!

I am writing this from "Coach" parked and plugged in at home.

After sitting in purgatory at RV center for almost two weeks, Coach was rescued.

I finally got the new accelerator cable installed today. The RV center walked
away from
the problem and I kept Coach plugged in on their lot while my outside machanic
from
neighboring Massachusetts searched and located a new cable.

I was charged $168.72 for the cable and about $100 for shipping (two overnight
charges). The mechanic found what I could not find. Blue Bird told me 4-5 weeks.

His search for the part was not easy even though he had a number off the
origional part
(Part # D303 116 from the original cable). Blue Bird Part # 1129543 (I am not
certain of
this. I don't have the tag yet), Morse # might be D33111.

The second cable they sent him had a Blue Bird tag on it. This is the one that
was
installed today. Somebody must be sitting on these somewhere. (I will try to
find out
where it cam from and post this information. Hopefully this experience won't be
as
painful for others.

My origional cable was 95". This one is 104". We put the new one in a piece of
fuel line
to protect it (even though it is heat rated) and tied it way away for the heat
that cooked
the original one. I now have full throttle. Even when the other was running
"right" I think
it was less than full because the old cable stretched over time.

It is my understanding that the Silver Edition FC's ( 87 to 89) use a
totally different cable. It is part of the Bendix cruise control. Where
is Bill Pape??

One more thought, I had know from the start this fix was going to coast me
hundreds of
dollars, I would have opted for a new Air throttle with a new cruise control. In
the end I
think may have been better off.

However, your FC is newer and may have a different set up.

Throttle cable
Hi Ray,

This issue has surfaced several times . I have never learned of the
exact repair or replacement cable solution. The original was a
proprietary cable made by Morse Cable, now Teleflex Morse for Bendix.
As you may have found out, it is no longer available nor is the
Bendix air throttle cylinder, or the Bendix cruise control, also not
available is the Foot Treadle air throttle, which activates the air
cylinder and cable.

Several of us owners have tried to find an, off the shelf cable as a
replacement to no avail. Those of us with a working throttle cable
hope it does not fail and we are reluctant to remove the cable and
shop around for a solution.

It is possible that Chuck's solution will work. But the ends may need
modified.

I would suggest taking the cable to a cable repair shop , Speedo
Shop, Marine or Motorcycle repair shop.

Another possibility is to replace the cable and air cylinder with a
Williams Controls remote Hydraulic air cylinder such as,

http://www.wmco.com/index.cfm

http://expressbuy.wmco.com/117886_WM_388...117886.htm

This would also disable the Cruise Control and the high idle option.

This cable is used on many FC's, and PT's, with mechanical injection
pumps, the Bendix Cruise control and the William Control foot treadle
throttle.

The above links may need to be a cut and paste,
If a desireable solution is found , we would appreciate a follow-up.
Others may have a better tried and true solution.

Ray,
I replaced the throttle cable a few years ago. I found a company that
made new cables, they needed the old one to copy.
I found the cable outfit through the local CAT Shop.
Hope this is helpful.

Rick Brink (87 FC) had Mike Holnstien (414 303 7079) rebuild his
throttle cable.
