I just can't seem to rid myself of the occasional holding tank odor,
so I'm thinking sticking a pair of these on the roof:

The concept is sound (use a small fan to create a slight negative
pressure inside the tank, thus ensuring all odors go out the roof
vents). I'm curious if anyone has installed these on a Bird, and if
so, how well they worked for you?

My only real concern is the existing vents on my coach (picture at
http://www.ryanwright.com/tmp/vent.jpg), which appear to take incoming
air while moving and use that to create the negative pressure. While I
don't foresee any problems swapping the Lil' Stankers for these, I did
want to ask here just to be sure I wasn't missing something.

From all reports I have seen those fans work fine. I think LilStanker has a model that installs in the vent line so you don't have to mess with the vent venturi. I think on one of these forums someone just installed them. That vent for all intent and purposes operates in a semi vacuum at best. It still would not hurt to seek out the source of the issue.
I have never had the problem except when driving with a window open. I cured that by closing the drains while in motion.

Ryan & Leroy,

I installed two lil-stankers on the coach back in September.
They work as advertised. Good service, burnt up a switch they repaced
it no charge and it was my installation that caused the switch to
burn, the hot wire got grounded under the rim of the lil-stanker, my
bad.I used the external unit, easier for me to install, I could only
access one up pie on the inside of the coach, so I decided to do both
pipes the same. The internal units are more powerful but I'm happy
with what I have. The last 1500 mile trip I had only one smelly
incident , just after dumping. I could not determine the source but
it hasn't reoccurred. I'm going to try Leroy's solution and make sure
the shower and other drain traps are full and I will use a flat,
soft, cover over the shower drain. If that does not work then the
only source left for me to fix is the one Rob R. pointed out. The air
vent in the toilet. Not sure what to do about that. Maybe Rob will
chime in here. If you have a washer/dryer you may want to check out
the check valve on the air purge system to winterize the water
system, they are not air tight, and as it turns out it was my #1
source of bad smells.

more on where you put them / how you accessed the vent lines. I'd
prefer the in-lines over the roof mounts, but it looks like it would

Ryan,

I would think that if the water can seep into the tank, then the
oders can "seep" out. This could possibly be the source of the oders
you keep smelling. Either try to replace the seal or the toilet. I
have not been following very closely. I don't know if a few hours
for the water to leak out would equate to the potential oders you are
encountering.

Ryan,

This post presumes you have the original Thetford Galaxie toilet that
were installed into many Bird.

Try to open the toilet flapper and clean the seal with a toothbrush
and lube with silicone grease or plumbers grease.
The seal is probably leaking which leads to oders entering the Bird'
the toilet seal should hold water indefinitely.
If the seal needs replaced there are are few options. A complete set
of seals are available about 6 seals, remove the toilet and replace.
this is a tinkerers nightmare,at about $50. and it may not fix the
problem, the kit does not replace the main valve and water shut-off.
The entire bottom of the toilet can be replaced , this is a good
option if the lid and bowl are in good condition about $150.00, .
Thetford has a universal replacement toilet Bravura.

IF the toilet is replaced there may be a lot more work with replacing
the
tile on the floor and the surround trimming in the rear of the toilet.
The Thetford 800 # is very helpful

I believe my coach has at least one vacuum breaker. The prints show two but I do not think it was installed because I cannot find it. Mine is screwed onto a stand pipe under the galley sink. It is black. If it leaks it will smell. There probably is an anit-siphon in the toilet line. I saw a post with the name the other day but cannot remember now. It is probably near the toilet or in a closet close to the wall. They leak also causing odor.

Last summer, I got a rebuild kit for my toilet. I took it outside and tookit apart. Cleaned everything I could get to. Scraped off the ball and installed the rebuild parts. Works as designed. The only odors I receive are from the power roof vent in the bath, if the wind is blowing a certain direction.
