Rest areas, picnic areas, roadside stopping/resting areas along US 281 in TX?

Howdy.
Traveling on US 281 from San Antonio, TX to Granbury, TX, I look for roadside rest areas, picnic areas or wide spots along the side of the road where Jack can pull over, stop the Bird and rest for a little bit. I have done searches on Google and can only find rest areas along the Interstate highways. So if you know of any places along US 281 from SA to Granbury where we can park the Bird for a short while, please let us know.

There are several along the way; one fairly large one south of Lampasas and one at Hamilton. Have you googled "texas roadside parks"? I did and there are lots of sites to view; no sense in both of us looking. There is one on west side as you go downhill to Marble Falls, but its on a good grade and might be tricky parking. Liz, if you are in Benbrook, you can pick up 281 in Stephenville. Excellent road all the way south. Lots of little towns with their own city parks. After several trips through Texas, I've found that all primary
highways (U.S. highways, and State Routes -- and a few FM roads) have
"picnic areas" every so often along the way. These can be on either
side of the road and most can accommodate a WL, especially if there
aren't other vehicles stopped. (A few have a 'U' shaped driveway that
might make it difficult for longer WL.) The picnic areas are signed
one mile in advance. That's far enough that you end up going too fast
when you finally see the thing -- so it's best to take note of the
odometer reading and slow down after about 3/4 mile. (I've seen lots
of skid marks in the roadway just before the picnic area, especially
near those on the "wrong" side of the road relative to your direction
of travel.)

Texas picnic areas are not full "rest stops" -- but rather are usually
a picnic table under a protective roof with a steel drum for trash.
(Larger picnic areas might have multiple picnic tables with covering
roofs.) I've never seen a rest room or even a porta-potty at any of
the picnic areas -- but that shouldn't be much of an issue for a WL...

I can safely say that I've even seen picnic areas in some of the most
desolate and unlikely locations, including the western desert on U.S.
287 from Ft. Stockton toward Carlsbad NM -- indeed, I took a photo of
one on that route showing the unappealing surroundings (dry, desolate,
minimal vegetation -- all brown and dead-looking) -- and there, truly
in the middle of nowhere is the shelter-roof, picnic table, and steel
drum of a Texas picnic area... (I only stopped to take the photo...)

You'll probably have no trouble encountering them in your travels in
Texas -- but I've never found a list or directory showing where they
all are.

 As far as I know you will only find picnic areas along 281. In addition to the ones already mentioned.....

 

 The nicest one I know of is just south of the little town of Evant, some flat parking, but high on a hillside with a nice view.(west side)

 

 Lampasas has a nice city park (with restrooms) right alongside the highway just south of the business area with large  parking areas. (east side)

 

 Another one big enough for a Bird is 2-3 miles north of Marble Falls (west side) 

 

 Hico has a small one that is accessible by a big bus, east side of road, south end of town (south of the

river bridge)

 

 Burnet also has one right in town (south end), but the dead end turnaround in it is probably too tight for good bus access.

 

 There is another small one on the east side about halfway between Hamilton and Hico, though small

there should be enough room for a bus because it is also the intersection of a county road

http://www.overnightrvparking.com (subscription site) has been making a concerted
effort to map Texas roadside picnic areas, and they have 8 currently on that
stretch of 281.

Hico has a great local place to eat. The Koffee Kup. Great diner fare with homemade donuts and homemade pies every day as long as they last. They're at 281 and 6.

Howdy.



I want to say a big THANK YOU to all that replied to this thread. The
information was very helpful. I also kept a log of landmarks such as
county roads, business buildings, etc near picnic areas. I need to type
this up. The only info I didn't log was GPS coordinates. We don't have a GPS device.

Pete was right about slowing down 3/4 mile after seeing the Picnic Area blue highway sign! There was an area where the sign was right across from the site!!! Not much warning, at all. That was unusual, though.

We did see Corey and Jenni Graham on the road. We honked the horn and waved frantically as we passed each!!
