enhancing 'Bird-of-the-Week

Hey group: Would you be interested in making the `Bird-of-the-Week feature a
little more enhanced and detailed, perhaps by including more photos, with
captions, and a little more description of some aspects of our
`bird/lifestyle/etc. to share with the rest of the membership? Ideas could
include anything from enhancing slightly (`little more description, or a few
more picts), to enhancing greatly (several more picts, with captions and a full
write-up of a few paragraphs, etc.), or even changing it to, or adding on an
additional, "Bird of the Month". Please reply and state if any of these sound
worth trying, or if you just feel it is perfect, just the way it is. Everyone
enjoys the feature, and many have said that they wish there were a few more
photos and more details about the coach, and how it is used, in order to really
celebrate its "fifteen minutes of fame"!

Important notice: When responding, keep in mind that any enhancing of the BotW
feature would mean that we all would have to work at trying to submit all this
extra content, and nag our friends to do the same, in order to have enough stuff
to keep the feature going. In addition, we would need volunteers to help edit
and format the submissions and then forward them to Mike for selection and
posting. This might consist of Photoshop-ing some photos, and checking the text
for spelling, continuity, etc. I am offering to do this, but may need some help
as well. A way to help promote submissions, could be to create a
form/questionnaire, that would make it easier to think of what to say about your

Sound like fun to me. I know of several stories both mine and friends that
would be VERY intertaining! It's always nice to know the story behind the
scenes and what others do or exerience. Doesn't have to be too elaborate, keep
it simple. Just some Thoughts.

About six years ago, while watching the Kangaroos jump over the fence here, I
suggested to Bruce & Ernie that he put a BIRD picture on instead of that duck
symbol or whatever that logo was......thats how it started and MIKE has done a
great job doing all that sorting out every week since then.....
Maybe it's time to enter phase two; maybe put 4 small pictures in the
square...maybe a story or something.......whatever evolves it will more work on
MIKE or somebodies part so I hope the volunteers are out there if Ernie and Ron
& Mike think it is time do put a bit more into the BOX.......would'nt hurt to
try.....
WINDS died down here no damage....all well in MELBOURNE< Australia....

Guys,

Remember, anything is possible, but we have limited space and you also have to keep the original photos in proper perspective based on the original size. What shows up good on my 24" screen at work is not what shows up on my 15" laptop, or someone's 9-10" netbook screen.

One I did recently in front of the Vanderbilt estate was actually two pictures 'stitched' together to get a panoramic shot.

I have several that took much PhotoShop work to get extraneous material out of the picture. Check out "Before" and "After" on the last page of the Bird of the Week Archive in Photos.

Mike: I think the only way this would work without a lot of work is: to just
add a link in the image that would take the viewer to another site that had all
this other information. Each participant would be responsible for all that
information, plus adding it to that site. There are free sites out there that
could be used. Everyone would have to agree on which service to place this
information on and we could set the guide lines.

If members don't have the time, then they do without or simply send you one
image to be used just like the current process. Those with the time and
inclination, can do what is described above.

you might just be able to hyperlink to a thred on the forum with a unique name "not Bird of the week" have the forum member who owns the BOTW Bird make the thread in rich text then add the additional photo's there in the first post to the thread then members could comment on the BOTW pics and thread in a familiar format. the comments are often as colorful as the origional thread.

Oh, I see them. When you go to the forum site, they show up. But I never do
that. Do most people use the forum that way? Open the site each day and read
messages there? I just see all the posts forwarded to my email, and I just read
them there and never really go to the site for anything, unless someone refers
to a photo they've posted or something (which is why I miss the BotW a lot).

Yes I only go to the forum and pull down the menu to the left "Messages". You
can go to the home page and look at a summary of activity just under the word
"Home" there you can see the latest content often hidden from threads (thus
emails).

You can turn off the Yahoo feature that sends emails to your mailbox by going
to the link on any page of the online forum. a blue hyperlink "edit Membership"
(above the word Forum in the purple line) will take you to a page where you can
define your preferences for mail delivery for just that forum.

when you go to a reply link of a message the screen that comes up is a text
entry screen for your reply/comments. Yahoo has a new text entry screen that you
can use called Rich-Text Editor you must first choose to use this 'Richtext
editor' then find images to add to your reply. It is best to have the images
loaded some place not password protected. The photos I use of Jays Bus are
password protected but that permission is the same that you need to view the
message as they are hosted on this forum in photos.

I opened two windows in ie7 one to make the reply and one to look for photos.
made the reply in Rich-text and found photos in the other window. when I found
Jays bus by the lake. I simply ;clicked on the image ;left clicked to open a
submenu than picked copy. with the image now on my clipboard I went back to the
window of the reply placed the cursor in the document then right clicked and
press paste.

the unique subject title other than Bird of the week is needed because the term
bird of the week picks up many old threads with that exact name. (Bird of week)
and a (1 to52 number of week) followed by (the year) "Bird of Week 35 2009"
would prove only one unique thread
