A few more repairs completed
Well, I finally got the tie rods replaced. It appeared the old tie rods were
original. The boots were gone completely and the tie rods couldn't be
disconnected from the tube due to rust. So, I ended up buying the whole piece
that stretches between the two tires. It was about $350 plus labor. But, I
suppose that's cheap when it comes to safety and peace of mind. I also had the
rear seal replaced on the tag axle hub. It was leaking and had soaked the drum
and ruined the brake shoes on that side.

I believe that's the last of the problems for now. I'll be hitting the road in
a few weeks en route to Southern Oregon. We have decided to stick to 101 vice
getting on I-5. The I-5 corridor from Southern California to Northern
California is rather boring - 101 will give us some scenery and great places to
stop and eat lunch with a view!

Hi Jerry,

I have that photo of the slobber tube oil sump that you wanted. I have added
it to the photos section of the forum under the title "Bella Vita"

Shane,

Thanks for the pictures. I'm going to give that a try and see how it works for
me!

101 is a great drive and has good views. It'll take longer than I-5, but I've always thought it was worth the extra time (unless I _had_ to be somewhere by a certain time). If you continue on 101 through Northern CA to Oregon, be aware that there are some stretches where it can be mildly challenging to a newby Bird owner.
Take it easy and enjoy the view.

Pete,

It is a beautiful piece of coast - one of the most scenic in the U.S. We have
already planned for the longer drive and plan to enjoy it fully. I don't think
the road should be any more challenging then with my 40' Beaver.

Jerry; Hwy 101 is great, If you get to Willits, they have a nice KOA, with a
stop for "The Skunk". but for scenery, Hwy 1 has it beat, but some parts might
be a bit tight for a Bird. Bodega Bay is a must see, with a good State Park,
Fortuna is a pretty place visit the Cheese Shop, and Crescent City is well worth
seeing..
We love the Northern California coast.
