genset maintenance

[fl_bluebird_1983]

I have a 12.5Kw Kohler/Perkins Genset and I want to change the oil
filter, air filter, and fuel filter. I have the Bluebird part numbers,
does anyone have a conversion part number I could use at the local auto
parts store? Would anyone recommend using synthetic oil, if so which
one? When I change the fuel filter what is the best way to release the
pressure on the line, and after I'm finished will the system re-prime
automatically, or will I need some kind of pump? SORRY to ask so many
questions at once, but you know how us newbies are!!

Syn. oil has done well for me, be sure it is a diesel oil. Not
necessary, just extra protection.

No need to release fuel pressure, there is no pressure with the engine
not running.

Priming is fairly simple, there is a handle on the fuel pump to prime
manually (pump up-down). I have always just loosened the line out of
the fuel supply pump on the engine, primed until no bubbles there, have
never had to use the procedure in the manual to prime further.

The oil filter for the Perkins is a NAPA Gold # 1268.
The air filter on mine is an oil coated wire mesh that
you just clean, not replace.
I'll have the fuel filter later, as I don't have that
in front of me. This will get you started.

That's interesting NAPA sold me a #1806 for the oil filter. Any idea Why?
The fuel filter they sold me was a #3166. Both are on the genset and
working fine at least to the best of my knowledge. I also have the oil bath
air cleaner.

Thanks George and Chet, the numbers on my filters were barely
readable, but after reading your posts it does look like 1806 & 3166
are what I have. The air filter is the wire mesh type. The air filter
has a sticker on the side that is hard to read but it looks like it
says use SAE 20 oil, but the manual says SAE 40. What do most of you
use. I live in Florida what weight oil would you sugest for the
generator motor (4 cylinder Perkins) the manual isn't clear.

Napa also sells a 1268 oil filter for the 3208, it is at least one
inch smaller, the screw on threads may be the same, but the filter
element is clearly smaller. I stick with only the big yellow Cat
filters for the 3208.

Bruce,
D'oh!!! The 1268 NAPA oil filter is the the 3208na Cat
engine. Sheesh.
The oil filter for the Perkins is 1806 in NAPA Gold.
I use 15W40 oil in the Cat and the Perkins.
I think I used 10w30 oil in the air cleaner for the Perkins
(didn't have any straight weight oil, if I did I'd use 20w).
