check transmission light

check transmission light
Yesterday the shop drained the transmission fluid, put on a new filter and
refilled with synthetic. Now the check transmission light comes on while I am
driving, goes off at idle, and it won't shift into fourth gear. Any ideas?

I've been running Transynd since I got my coach -- previous owner was using it as well. There has been no issues whatsoever with the transmission.
You may need to visit an Allison dealer and have them read the 'codes' to get some idea of what's going on. I suppose that the synthetic may have loosened some left over gunk from the old dino-fluid that has subsequently clogged or blocked something inside.
To quote from the Transynd brochure: [Natural oils] undergo physical and chemical changes with extended use. Physical changes include sheardown -- permanent viscosity loss.
Chemical change results fromoxidation when oxygen combines with oil molecules to produce peroxides and organic acids. The oil thickens over and becomes more acidic. Sludge and varnish deposits erode shift quality and clutch durability and cause increased component wear.
I believe that it is recommended that the transmission be "flushed" to remove the dino-oil before converting to a synthetic.

underfilled one. I had it happen to me when we had a '90 Bird. The Wanderlodge
dealer left it 7 quarts low.

Good point! There's a process to filling the Allison tranny and it must be
followed to ensure the needed fluid gets to all the holes. If not, you can end
up wayyyyyy short. Check it and add as needed.

It may be just the opposite problem Rich, The book calls for 16 quarts and after we put in four gallons it was still low at the stick so we put in two more quarts. The allison shop said to drive it until the fluid got hot, then find a level spot and check it again. If the level is ok then bring it to their shop and they will read the codes ($105 plus tax minimum charge). If it is too full hot just drain some out.

air bubbles????. the torque converter holds fluid that wont drain with a flush
alsothe transmission cooling device holds fluid. could be that the two (dino,
synthetic) dont mix. even if they do mix when both are new. the old fluid may be
different than what you think due to heat time ,additives, moisture etc. at
idle there is less throw in the t/c and less slinging oil.
The other possibility is in your post. (wrong filter was used) ( the tech
screwed with a valve when removing the filter??)

Looking back, it was the book that was wrong. It takes seven gallons with a filter change not four. I will need to change it one more time after the fluid in the torque converter and coolant lines mix with the synthetic. I double checked the filter and it is the right one so I don't know maybe there was a change in capacity around 1988 when they changed to wide body and the book didn't get changed. I wonder what the book says for 1989 and 1990. Anyway I will change it again when I change the oil and see if the problem repeats.

After you empty the tranny dump the heat exchanger. I wonder if there is a way
to have the tc pickup new fluid? I would just take it to a shop for a check
over and rechange (if needed). it may be that no replacemet oil is needed and
the issue is unrelated. a 20 year old tranny will have proven the same set of
symptoms in relation to like events and tasks completed. A good tech should be
able to draw limited possibilities and eliminate each quickly while the pan is
off and the recently replace oil is in a clean container.
