Tachometer fix
Time to fix the tachometer. I have only owned the wanderlodge for a
few weeks, 2 short weekend trips so far, and have finally opened the front. Luckily it has a swing radiator, looks like it was modified after the original build, probably when the new engine was installed. Any way I need to get the fan off, it is an electric fan and I am not sure if this was stock I am guesing not because of the "custom" wiring block mounted on the front of the motor to power the fan. I have removed the large bolt in the center and I can see a shaft with a keyway, a bearing and the fan housing. The fan spins freely on the shaft or should I say on the bearing. Now how do I remove the fan? I am guessing a puller is needed but not sure. Any one famaliar with removing this type of fan? Troy, Waconia MN 83 FC 33 |

stop! remove the 4 bolts that hold the fan and housing to the block.pay very

Tachometer fix
Thanks for the tip, unfortunatly I already removed the bolts and the
bars and I did not mark them. What does this effect? The bars are on the outside of the fan support so I don't see how they could effect anything. Also I removed the tach drive and the drive pins were good. Any ideas why the tachometer would work when idling but stop working above idle? Anyone know how to test voltage output levels and what they should be? Tachometer fix
The flat bars have holes that are offset toward the inside, have to
be installed again with the holes offset toward the inside/fan shaft. The tach drive on the '83 is an AC type, also used as cruise-control sender of that vintage, should increase frequency at increased RPM. You could use a DMM with a freq. counter on it, see if it is relative to RPM increase. The only other check I can think of is to put the output on a scope, and you can drive the sender with a drill if you're careful. Check the angle-drive, spin the input adapter with one hand while providing some resistance to the output cable and see if it slips internally, some do as the bevel-gears wear. Could also be the tachometer, although I've never had one fail. The angle-drive is apparently a special part, I've never been able to find one with a long enough input reach to clear the engine with a sender on it. BB should have the angle-drive, and I believe that HMH in Holland also has a cache of them on-hand, but haven't been there in a while. the bolt holes in the bars are offset to one side,if installed backwards the

Tachometer fix
I cleaned and reasembled the tach drive, no broken parts found. I
started the motor and the gauge appears to be working, but when I rev the engine, quarter throttle max in neutral, the RPM goes over 3000. Is this correct? There is no red line on the guage. 2800 is normal for your engine. That doesn't mean it's OK to run it there
continuously. 2000/2300 is a safe cruise speed. Just had a similar problem. After three trips to the truck repair place problem was solved with a new sending unit. Before biting the bullet for a new sending unit ($100 +)be sure that right angle drive if in good shape and that all wiring is good. Tachometer fix
If you have instrument problems, I suggest that you go to a
speedometer shop or instrument shop. They are the experts and have the proper equipment and training to quickly diagnose the problem and repair them. I have found their prices to be less than a general repair shop who has to go to the instrument shop for the parts and sometimes the expertise, then add a markup. FWIW.
