Chuck, I thought it was NEMA L6-50, but when I just looked it up, the L6 configuration now lacks neutral. Instead, of the three pins being hot-hot-neutral, with the ground connection made via contacts in the case, the L6 now contains one pin dedicated to ground. Apparently 'code' now does not like the older version grounding via the case. If we want 240 and 120 vac (2 hot legs, neutral and ground), apparently we are supposed to use a NEMA L14 4-pole connector that has four pins, hot, hot, neutral and ground. I just replaced my original 1976 50 amp male connector on the bus to make it compatible with the 50 amp 240/120 volt cables I already use around marinas (3-poles plus case ground). When I spoke to a licensed electrician recently about installing a 50 amp receptacle outside the garage, he told me that code required this new four pin connector that I see associated with home generator connectors. Perhaps someone who knows more can elaborate. I agree with Don. If you are rebuilding the shore cable anyway, replace the
male connecter and go with the 4-pin system.
