air step repair and troubleshooting

in the interest of the forgoing post,,, before trying anything with
the step,, let all the air pressure off,,, and then, see if you can move the
step by hand,, to see if it is jammed,, after that,,, just be careful,,, day

My airstep stopped working. When I hit the switch, I hear click and air
but no movement. I stopped the engine and I hear air leaking out of the
ram. There is a file in archives regarding troubleshooting but it seems
to be gone. Anyone have that info?

Also, what are the two devices mounted under the coach behind the step?
Seems to be a solenoid and some sort of electric motor and another
large thing that has air lines..anyone?

Running most there is the air ram, two microswitches ('84-on or one
before '84), an additional lock air-ram ('84-ish), and the air solenoid.

As there were several configurations of air step controls, it would be
helpful to know your year and model, one size doesn't fit all.

It could be that the step is jammed, if it is the version with the
small lock air-ram under the edge of the doorway that could be jammed
and locking the step out. Be careful to keep any part of your body that
is important to you away from moving parts, it could suddenly free up
and slam open/closed.

More information might help troubleshooting, model/year, and is the
step stuck out or in? Is there sufficient air pressure?

where are the microswitches...thanks Jeff

The microswitch (1) on the '79 is under the step, should be open when
the step is all of the way retracted.

As far as extending the step, three-way switch wiring between the
dash switch and stepwell switch is original, any problem with the
wires or either switch will stop the switch from operating. Also
check the doorjamb switch, has to be closed for the step to extend,
can simply short the wires, ... the switch can be found in Autozone
et al in the HELP brand of repair parts.

There should also be a relay with a round-pin pattern either in the
transfer switch compartment in earlier 'Birds it is on the forward
wall of the generator bay.
