I have the 12.5 Kohler generator in an 85 PT40 it smokes quite alot,
is there anything I can do in minor maintanence? When I start it up it

I once overfilled my generator accidentally and the oil got slipped
through and smoked out of the exhaust pipe. Plus side is that it
killed a lot of mosquitos! Probably not your problem, but it's worth
checking anyway, especially if you didn't service it yourself.

Does the smoke smell any certain way? Exhaust? Oil? Does the
generator appear to be operating normally or running rough? Possibly
your choke?

Scott- you mentioned that you knew a fella that was extremely knowledgeable
about exhausts. can you share with us what he told you about your generator
exhaust. I have seen quite a few exhausts that were extremely small, thus in my
thinking would be restrictive in the performance of that engine. thanks,

Hey John, Scott here from Murrells Inlet. I would check a couple of
things regarding smoke..mine would leave a big soot mark where I was if
I let it run for any length of time...
Is there water in the fuel..fuel filter change will tell that
What is the size of the exhaust pipe..I just changed mine to 1.75"
and made mine better but should have gone to the 2" exhaust diesels
gotta breathe.
Oil level ok not too full.
Injector could be stuck or not working correctly remove and have
tested, replaced..a good "tune-up" will check this.
John, alot depends on the color of the smoke, blue smoke is oil
burnign, black smoke is usually a fuel problem.
I will email you the fault guide from the kohler manual fyi..it gives
many things to check depending on color of smoke..Hope all is well with
you and the family
