Dash Air '97 BMC 40'
My dash air has suddenly stopped working. I have checked the center fuse
panel -- all are ok. The condenser fans are running as are the dash fans. The compressor clutch does not engage. The air worked fine Thursday morning and wouldn't work in the afternoon. Dash Air '97 BMC 40'
Hi Mike,
I just had the same problem and it turned out to be the compressor clutch coil had developed an open. New coil was $38.... Clutch was okay. Disconnect the wire that feeds the clutch and see if you have 12 volts at that location with the system on. Secondarily, check for continuity thru the clutch coil and third, to make certain, run a jumper direct from the battery to the coil wire and see if it activates the clutch. If not, remove the clutch and take to an auto A/C shop so they can match the coil. George Lowry '95 WBDA 4203 & the GM 4106 is sold..... George, With only one coach to maintain.
Congratulations on the sale. What will you do with all your spare time?? We still have two by choice, The Bird for long trips and a smaller Dodge Roadtrek for short trips. George,
Excellent advise, as usual. IF the clutch engages after it's jumpered with battery voltage, the next step would be to check the pressure switch(es). There's a switch in the high pressure line to shut down the compressor after loss of refrigerant as a safety feature. It will be a small aluminum sensor in the high pressure line somewhere with 2 wires going to it. If you can find it, remove both wires and hold them (or jumper them) together. If the compressor clutch activates, either the switch is bad or you've lost all the freon. If the suction pipes get cold when the compressor runs, you need a switch. Some systems have a 2nd switch on the suction (low) side also, but it's rare. ALSO, congrats on selling your bus. I was going to see if you'd finance it for me at 10 bucks a week, but it's too late now. Let me know if the deal falls through. LMAO!! Bill,
What a great idea - averaging the mileage 8-) !!! We are trying to get everything out of the house so we can get it on the market. Astounding what you can gather in 35 years... Once we get on the road, we will have only the Bird and the Cad Fleetwood but averaging would help. (the Cad averages 26 mpg on the highway.) I'm looking forward to having time to work only on one coach and nothing else. BTW, John and Barbara Ely sopped by this past week and we had a short but enjoyable visit with them. They are wonderful people. Hope to be seeing more of them on the road.
