gen. door, radiator....

Hi,
well, I did it this time when I went to town today to diesel up the
bird before the prices hike again ($1.83.9) with most in the area
hitting 1.98.9...
anyway, rats...dented in the genny door which poked into the radiator.
(Little dog sitting up on dash and blocked that lower mirror which
would have shown me I was too close to the cement blocks..) now it's to
find someone who can fix or fabricate the gen. door and repair the hole
in the radiator.
Wouldn't you know we were planning a trip this weekend but don't want
to be without the generator..(ha to save a few cents on diesel!)

I got the gen door removed and am working on getting the radiator out
so it can go to the radiator shop and hopefully be repaired. The bent
door caused the framing around the louvres to push into the radiator....
I think I can straighten the door without a problem, didn't crease it
or anything. Hoping it didn't mess up the slide....kinda a greasy job
but have more time than $$ so hope by taking the radiator out and in
myself I can cut down the $ to fix my own stupid mistake!

Rosemary I replaced my generator door when I hit it with a curb late at
night. My local Bluebird Bus dealer made me a new one identical to the OEM
one for $50. These dealers have everything to make a new panel for any part
of our Forward control coaches. Then I had it painted by a local body shop
for $40. Very very reasonable. You might check with your BB school bus
dealer in your area. You will also find lots of parts there at a cheaper
price for some reason then directly from BB.

When we were to Blairs Rally, the radiator in our FC31 went south..
They did a great job at MEDFORD RADIATOR. Replaced the 5 tube with a
6 tube setup..
We were happy with the service and shop. They let us park the Coach
in thier yard, with power, and stay in it at night..

Keep track of the grill in it however. I don't know first hand, but
I've heard they're either hard to find, or getting expensive.

Hi, thanks for the responses.
The louvre grill isn't really damaged and think I can get the door to
work ok, hopefully.
I've got the radiator unbolted and the main hose clamp loosened but
the hose isn't wanting to come off easily. Got too hot, so will get
back to it in the cool am. Do I just need more muscle, twist & groan,
a knife or what?
Don't think we have a local bluebird bus dealer around here. I did
talk with the fellow who runs the local school district bus shop once
but he just jobs any repairs (engine etc) to a local truck shop. Body
work I don't know.
of course hoping for a quick fix as were hoping to use to coach this
upcoming weekend for a jaunt.
Haven't tried the gen set slide, afraid if it was damaged I'll never
get the gen. pushed back in....

you out if that fails why not go to a sheet metal shop and have the
metal bent and replace the door

Using a screwdriver I was able to work around the top hose and get it
off.....duh, how the heck do you get to the bottom one....or whatever
is holding the bottom of the radiator from coming out.

Rose Mary,

You just have to reach way down in there and do the same thing as you
did on the top hose. It is tough to get to down in that tray, so it
might be easier to take the bottom hose off from the water pump
instead and leave the hose connected to the radiator until you get it
out. I'm thinking that's what I might have done to get my 83 radiator
out of the genset tray when I re-did the radiator.
