Internet Access on the Road and at Home

The performance and coverage of the Verizon EVDO Broadband cell
Internet Service in Washington State is great. I use it in my home
when I am home and on the road when I am on the Road. At home the
performance is better than DSL with over 1000 download speed. On the
Road the worst I have seen is 144 download. The upload speed is
usually around 100 whether on the Road or at home. At home I hookup
my notebook with the EVDO PCMCIA Card to my home network and share
the connection with the other computers on my home network. I was
able to turnoff my Comcast internet service saving me $60 per month
thus my combine home/road internet is only costing me around $19 (
$79 - $60 ). When on the Road I am setting up a wifi access point
for BlueBird owners to share my connection via WiFi. I also use a
suction cup mounted external antenna to improve reception if needed
when on the road (usually not needed).

I really like the quick setup (none) when stopping for the night
since the connection is always online for a non-driver to use as we
travel down the hiway.

I did alot of study of dataStorm and databahn (went to Texas for a
$3000 class to become a certified installer of databahn) and my
conclusion is that the Verizon EVDO Cell Broadband is the best
solution for me.

Only real problem with the Verizon solution is that there is nothing
for me to sell to a client. You just go to Verizon and pickup your
card and turnoff your other network provider.

I have had a Wireless Verizon card for years.
Best way to buy is on eBay.

Search for the PC 5220.

Used they go for about $50-70.

That way no 1 or 2 year contract at $79 per month.

I believe Verizon is now pushing the PC 5740. $99. with 1 year
contract.

With the PC 5740 you can not use an external antenna.
With the PC 5220 you can use an external antenna. (About $30 w/
Adaptor.)

The technology changing so fast you do not want to be stuck with a
long contract.

Dave and Judy,

Just got off the phone with Verizon and got some conflicting numbers - guy
talked so fast, I asked him to email me specifics.

He said they no longer carry the PC5220 and only the PC5740. Also said that
the external antenna had no effect on digital - only on analog. Quoted me
$79.99 per mos for the internet access and added the phone on top of that - in
other words - two lines. When I'm on the road I selodm use the phone cuz I get
most things and communication done thru internet, etc.

Does this jive with your info?

Just as a gauge of performance, did your Verizon card work for
internet access when you and Dick were at the Lone Star Bird rally at
the Buckhorn Ranch in Kerrville, TX? If so, what kind of speed did
you get there?

Makes sense, but I would still buy the pc 5220. I would rather have a
slower connection with an antenna than no connection at all. If you
do not need a phone it's $79.00 unlimited access.


I would check with Mr. Kim.
This guy knows his stuff. He can suggest which laptops work best
with the card. I had an Avertec Laptop that had too much internal
noise I could never get a connection.

Yes ...

1) Verizon cell EVDO Broadband Cost is $79.99 per month for
unlimited Internet.
2) EVDO does involve a second line that you can not use to talk on.

The PCMCIA Card I use is a Novatel V620 that is sold by Verizon for
$49 after rebate when I bought it. I have seen the V620 PCMCIA Card
for as little as $19 on the web. You can get an external antenna for
the V620 ... see websites below:

Judy and I each have a Verizon phones (Motorola V710) on a family
plan that cost around the same ($79) per month. Many of my friends
have the same Verizon service so we can call without using our
minutes.

There is another internet access option (called QquickAccess) that
cost only $5 per month from Verizon but they use your minutes unless
you wait til after 9 pm or the weekend (if you have free evening and
weekend minutes). Requires a $40 cable that attaches to your
Motorola Phone. But very slow speed (14.4) .

a Verizon and purchased the cd and cord to connect to the HP Laptop for
$48.00. The installed the dial up from the cd, hooked up the phone and was
on the net getting e-mail. There has been no charge to the phone bill for
using this system and all the calls on line and browsing has shown up as no
charge. There are two different speeds, one being the Quick access as Dave
said and I have to use that selection when in roaming status. The other is
1x and I get on line at 230kb and the speed seems fast enough for most
things. I have not had any problems getting connected, yet, and we have
made on line reservations at RV parks going down the road when we were
about 2 hours from where I wanted to stop for the night. It works for us. I
first tried it out using Bruce Morris' same set up, at Bird's Nest, on my
laptop and went down the next day and bought the system.

Ralph is correct about the 2 speeds available (QuickAccess 14.4 and
NationalAccess 144). QuickAccess is free except for cell minutes
and "NationalAccess" is available for any added monthly cost.
Verizon does not have a block on use of this higher speed but I have
hear of some that have gotten a unpleasant surprise on their cell
phone bill if they over use the higher speed option.

So please be careful with use of "NationalAccess" unless you buy
the "NationalAccess" plan from Verizon. Last time I checked, I
think the unlimited plan for "NationalAccess" was $79 per month
(same as the cost of "EVDO Broadband").

Note: "NationalAccess" is the service that "EVDO BroadBand" falls
back to if "EVDO Broadband" is not available in the area that you
travel to.

Confusing stuff... I think by design.
