LP Detector Exhibiting Flakey Behavior. Any ideas?

Howdy, Y'all.

In our 1993 Wanderlodge, the LP gas detector has been sounding off
lately. When that happens, I go out into the kitchen to check. But I
can't smell anything amiss. That stinky smell of a propane leak isn't
present. Sometimes the detector goes off for about 5 seconds then
stops. This happened at 1 AM Wednesday. Between 1-2 AM, it sounded
about 4 times.(didn't wake Jack up though!) Last night, around 9 PM it
went off again. We waited to see if it would stop but it didn't. Jack
turned it off for the night. At 11:15 AM, today, I turned it back on.
This behavior is occuring more often in the last 4 months. Jack is
wondering if the sensor of the detector is failing. As far as we know,
this detector is original to the coach.

Any ideas as to how we troubleshoot this annoying problem?

Hi Liz:

As in everything, dust can cause you problems there as well. Try blowing
into the sensor area to clear the dust out and see what happens. Failing
that the sensor may need replacing. I am taking for granted that your
sensor unit is the grey one? There should also be a reset button on it,
some do some don't have that option. Replacing the unit is no big deal
either, really, 3 butt connectors and crimp pliers. I have had to replace 2
lately.

Liz,

My first response is, as Jack's is, that the sensor might be going
bad. I'd see if it can be cleaned or blown out also.

My second response is to ask if you have any pets. Our Rottweiler
used to set ours off, whenever she had something 'gaseous' to eat. 8^)

Hi Jack & Liz,
Granted other gases will set the detector off,but it appears with the times
that are setting it off,it seems that the first thing to do is clean it of
all dust and any other matter that may collect in and near the sensor.
But yes, an animal can set it off also.
I agree with Ralph and Mike!
If cleaning don't do it replacement is all that is left.

A big THANK YOU to all that replied to my request for ideas. Jack will
check for dust, animal hair, corrosion etc. on the unit. We'll let
y'all know what happens.

Hi Liz,

Glad to hear you are recovering well. We need to keep you.

Regard the LP detector - Remember that those detectors will sound off
on many things. Hair spray, spray deodorant, gas passing by animals
and other similar items will be detected and cause the system to alarm.
