Howdy, Y'all.
YEEEEEE-HAH!!!!
Jack is a SHORT-TIMER! Jack's employer has offered him early retirement. His
last day of employment will be December 31, 2005 instead of March 31, 2006.
We will be staying here in SE Florida because our site has been paid for,
through March, 2006. This park doesn't give refunds.

Now we HAVE to buy a toad. Jack is pressing me hard on this. I hate to go car
shopping! My dream toad is a F250 pickup truck with a diesel engine. Fuel/gas
mileage is a very big concern. Doesn't look like I am going to get that truck.

We have a bunch of fixing to do to the Wanderlodge. One big thing to fix is a
leaking black water tank. There are other smaller problems to solve. After 12
years, the water pumps(that's right, there are TWO) need to be refurbished. One
of the tires needs to have a new valve stem installed. We want to purchase a
tire pressure monitoring system and replace the 12 year old microwave OR maybe
get it fixed, if parts are available. And Jack wants to replace the bedroom air
conditioner.

I am going to find out if the park manager will let me have a moving sale. We
have things that we can't take with us.

Liz the Ford F250 with a diesel is one of the last vehicles that I
would chose for full timing. That power stroke diesel is really
packed in there and is a beast to work on. I suggest before you
consider one you investigate fully what it will cost to maintain it,
the cost of filters for instance is ridiculous. I really like the
Honda Odyssey and a 2005 is very hard to beat for a toad

Honestly, congrats to you both.

Sorry about the chat thingy, don't know what is going on there, save for
normal Yahoo stuff.

Many a Coach tow a Jeep Grand Cherokee, they are made for towing. There is
a key position for it too. Charolette and I have a 1 1/2 minute hook up and
down the road with ours. About the same when un hooking for the night too.

Congratulations are of course in order for both of you have probably
worked hard and long to arrive at this point in your lives. You must
be very excited to at last see the culmination of all of your hard
work and dreams. I am concerned however at the number of people I
see retiring to the life of a full time RVer and wonder if all of
them have planned for the many changes that are taking effect. I have
a brother that retired from General Motors about 5 years ago and
already his retirement will be effected by the new changes General
Motors has recommeded and the unions have agreed to. Health care
costs are skyrocketing (my share of the plan just went up 50%) and
there is no end to it in sight. I have friends that have totally lost
their health care plans that were promised to them when they
retired. Diesel fuel just increased and its only a matter of time
before that effects the cost of tires, places to park the Rvs and
many other things. I dont know either of you but if I were to offer
you one single bit of advice it is to look carefully at every aspect
of what you are about to do. And make sure both husband and wife are
aware of what may happen if one of you should pass away before the
other and you are still full timing.
I apologize if this appears to be an entrusion into your personal
lives. But its something I feel very strongly about. Just had a
friend of mine pass away and the wife never knew that her husband and
traded her part of his pension if he were to pass away before her for
a higher initial monthly retirement check. She signed the papers but
did not realize the impact on her. Now at age 70 she is back to work
just to survive.

Hope you both are well and enjoy everything you have planned for.

I've never used a pickup as a TOAD, but TOWED with a '96 F-350 dually crew-cab
when I was full-timing in 1998-1999. I had the Power Stroke 7.3L with a
performance chip and PacBrake. I installed a K-N oil filter that was superb
(model E-1946). This truck was the "old-look" body design. I changed oil every
3,000 miles, followed the "severe maintenance schedule" with regard to tranny
and rear end service. I towed a 1998 35' Alpenlite 5th wheel through 34 states
including Alaska. More to the point, I put 62,000 miles on the truck and it was
trouble free - seriously. Towing, I averaged 10-11 MPH and solo on the
Interstate, 19 MPH. Of course, I was only paying .75 to .85 per gallon for
diesel. I enjoyed being a "fiver" but if I were to entertain full-timing again,
my choice would be a BB.
I enjoy this forum very much - learning a lot about the Wanderlodge coach and
enjoying the photos of the rallies. Some nice lookin' Birds out there. Thanks.

congratulations on the early retirement!
On the F250 diesel, I've had one about 3 years and love it! The only
thing I feel as safe in is the coach!
The price of diesel is coming down and the mpg on the diesel is
pretty darn good! I don't know about using it as a toad but I love my
truck and haven't found it that expensive to maintain....

We have been fulltiming for 11 years now. What a coincidence that you
should write about your concerns re: fulltiming. Just this
weekend we were going over all of the forms and retirement elections
send to us by Jack's employer. All is in order and since we have both
had very serious surgery, we have our wills and advance directives
already.

The increased cost of diesel is a concern, of course. We probably
won't travel as often as we might like.
