Question about "Woody's Genset Modification"....
...in the 'pics' section.

What is the benefit of this modification? Does is reduce noise?

Thanks

I would think that if would reduce noise and warm air in the patio
area. We had an '81FC31 and that was a major complaint. I've
heard, though not seen, that reversing the fan blade is also a fix
for this problem. You might search Vintage Birds Archives on this
subject as that is where I think I have heard about it.

Question about "Woody's Genset Modification"....
Mine "sucks in" through the vent now, does that mean my fan has
already been reversed? Do they normally blow out through the vent?

The gen noise in the patio area is my #1 complaint about my coach.
Any tips about reducing it would be greatly appreciated.

Question about "Woody's Genset Modification"....
Scott,

No modification to the Perkins genset will completely eliminate the
noise that it creates, similar to the new "Quiet Diesel" gensets, but
doing this modification does indeed reduce the noise level of the
Perkins gensets. I just had the same modification done to mine with a
little more of a twist, since I needed a new fan motor, I opted to
install a household squirrel cage fan instead of the original style
fan, this helped somewhat , but the elimination of the radiator
opening in the door was perhaps the most significant reduction in
noise area.

I still need to redo the insulation in the generator compartment, as
all of the old insulation is gone, with the exception of the new
door, where I installed new insulation. The muffler that I chose to
install, a tractor muffler was the wrong choice, as it is now the
most noticeable noise, so that will be changed soon to an auto style
muffler, I have some other ideas that I am going to try, but I will
reveal those when I have put them in to use, if they do anything to
help reduce some noise.

You can check out the modification that was done to mine by going to
my web site and checking out, the numerous photos of the modification

Question about "Woody's Genset Modification"....
Sucking through the vent is factory.

The noise can be reduced somewhat by insulating the door, and by
changing to a 2-speed blower motor (low on start, high on thermostat).

I haven't heard Woody's modification yet, but I'd expect that a nice
two-speed squirrel-cage fan blowing out through the floor of the drawer
would be a great modification (like the PTs and late FCs have only 2-
speed).
