Report on the Craig's break down in Texas
Glad to hear the Wallace is finally off the side of the road. When Brenda and
I came up on them, he was looking at the engine. Their toad was covered with this transmission/ coolant mess. Shortly thereafter, Marvin and Doris Middlebrooks came up- he had his gloves on. Rick and Terri McIntire were soon to join the crowd, followed By Bob and Judy Johannsen. We could have had a mini rally. Report on the Craig's break down in Texas
Good evening to everyone:
An up date on Wallace and Faye Craig's 95PT42WB breaking down on the way home from the LSB Rally in Borne Tx. The transmission, somehow allowed coolant from the series 60 engine to intermix with the transmission fluid turning the color to tan. Am not sure what gave way at this point. A rebuilt transmission will be coming from Allison for the replacement, at a cost I am sure. Wallace and Faye are safe, Faye is home and Wallace is in San Antonio Tx at a motel and the Coach is at Stewart Stephenson. It appears that the transmission will have to be replaced. Wallace asked me to "thank everyone" who stopped to lend a hand, for him and as he learns more about the failure, the cause and so forth, he will keep everyone apprised as to what happened. Anyone with a Series 60 set up have any problems such as this? The Coach was not under severe strain. Wallace had just passed a slower vehicle and his speed got to 75 MPH then as he was slowing, the check engine light, then the stop engine light came on in that order. Report on the Craig's break down in Texas
It sounds like a cracked transmission oil cooler located in the radiator
allowed water to mix with the transmission fluid. Makes a real mess of the cooling system & transmission. Hopefully things will work out ok for Craig. Bill & Rita in Roanoke, VA ( 30--dodged the big snow storm) 1987 FC-35 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Mike, when I asked Wallace about his engine temp- he said it did not get hot.
He did stop on the wide side of the road when the stop engine lite came on. When coolant and transmission fluid mixes, it comes out as a runny gel. That is going to be a real headache to clean out. Ernie-83pt40 in texas [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

If Wallace got coolant and tranny oil mixed, let's hope he shut the engine down in time when the light came on and isn't looking at an engine re-build also...... As it is, it is going to be a bear of a job to flush out all the coolant system. Did Wallace say what the engine temp was when the stop light came on? Ernie, not only does it make a hell of a mess, I just back home today after
authorizing Stewart & Stevens to install a factory reman Allison transmission. S& S assures me that the current one is toast because of the fluids effect on electronic components in the tranny. Also must pull and fix radiator; the cost will use most of my lunch money for next 5 years. Just goes to show, no matter how careful you are with inspections, problems can still arise. Can probably reclaim coach next week; did get to have a jollly ride in a huge wrecker that would have satisfied most noise freaks. Mike, engine temp was within normal range. All three warning lights going on at
once really gets your attention; yes I stopped immediately. No engine rebuild as far as I know now, but must replace tranny with rebuilt one from Allison. S&S in San Antanio will get the coach back sometime next week after they also clean the radiator. If the coolant got in the tranny oil, then it's probable that the tranny oil got in the circulating engine coolant also. Both fluids would have been under pressure. They are going to flush the engine cooling system out, aren't they?
