Front Rim Replacement, 1979 FC 35
(1) What type of rim do I need, so I know what to search for, for the front of
my bus? I'm assuming that I have the original rims on it and, since my tires are fairly new, I'd like to stick with the same size. (2) Is there any special information that I need to know to properly describe my rims? (3) Any recomendations on where to purchase the rim? (4) Last April someone had written to me about a place in Florida, I believe it was a truck stop, that had a new rim for my bus at a darn good price. Unfortunately, I cant' find that message. Anybody recall such a message? It would have been around April 8th, 2005. (5) Thanks. Henry Claeys, McAllen, Tx. 1979 FC 35, Henry@... |

Henry,
Have you tried going to "Links" on the WanderlodgeForum home page and then using the 'Archive Search' function that was created courtesy of Dennis Nichols? Works for me when searching for old posts. Locally for you, Bexar Trailer, off 410 in south San Antonio has Alcoa rims avaiable. Contact me offline if you can't find a listing for them. The original rim was an aluminum 7.5x22.5 Accuride (Firestone). They
are "Stud-Piloted" (known to some as "Budd or Budd-Mount") NOT Hub- Piloted. You will want to match the rim width on the other end of that axle, probably still the original 7.5" wheel also but it's best to check. Alcoa is good, brand can be mixed as long as they are all the same size. 8.25" is more common and easier to find used or new, might be cheaper, but you'd need to replace all rims on that axle then. - Jeff Miller in Holland, MI --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Henry Claeys" wrote: > > > (1) What type of rim do I need, so I know what to search for, for the front of my bus? Henry,
Check with the truck tire and wheel dealers. I bought an Alcoa rim for 11RX 22.5 for my 78FC from a dealer in Dallas who had taken them in trade for a bus owner who wanted to put 12Rs on his bus. They often have trade-in wheels - you can get a good deal if you are willing to do the polishing. The last two 12Rs I bought for my 91 WLWB, I got from the Michelin dealer in Oklahoma City. The polishing is hard work and is expensive if you want someone else to do it. But most tire stores know someone locally who does it. Good luck, Bob & Judy Johannesen 91WLWB40 "Seldom Blue" Argyle, Texas mbulriss <mbulriss@...> wrote: Henry, Have you tried going to "Links" on the WanderlodgeForum home page and then using the 'Archive Search' function that was created courtesy of Dennis Nichols? Henry,
I was just looking in our Classified Ads, under Database, and Jack Smith has 3 Alcoas for sale in there for $150 each. They are the 8.25" wide which came on later BIrds. So you'd need to buy a pair for the front, but the wider rim spreads the tire face for as better footprint, which gives you better handling. I changed Stagecoach to the Alcoa 8.25" rims in front on the recommendation of my tire guy and it was a good change.
