Stud Piloted vs Hub Piloted

[Henry Claeys]

I'm searching for 8.25 X 22.5 rims for my 1979 FC 35. So far I've found many
more hub piloted instead of the stud piloted rims. Is much modification
required to use the hub piloted rims? I'm guessing that I'd need different
hubs. Henry@... McAllen, Tx 1979 FC 35.

Henry,
Check with Billy Moran at T.C.I. Tires in Oklahoma City at 800-322-2710. He
had an a connection for wheels. I bought two used ones from him and got a good
deal, but I had to polish them. Tire shops at truck stops usually have someone
near who polishes wheels.

The cost would be too much to be worth it IMO, you can buy stud-piloted

At the risk of embarrassing myself, what do those terms mean?

I had to learn the lesson after I purchased a set of 6 brush finish alloys.
Time came to mount the new tires, I noticed there was no divot around the stud
holes to receive the lug nuts. The dealer got me the right ones no problem. He
did say the stud pilot stuff is getting harder to supply. Don't know if that
was BS or not.

Hi Dick,
I'll try to explain.

Stud piloted...the wheel centers on the studs. The wheel stud holes and
lug nuts are tapered. The tapers center the wheel when the lug nuts are
tightened.

Hub piloted...the wheel is centered on the hub. The wheel stud holes and
lug nuts are not tapered.

Someone will chime in if my explanation needs refinement.

OK Stephen, I went to the 2 sites. Everything was fine till I saw the 2nd
(outside) wheel illustration on the stud centered system. Is there yet another
system? One with the first wheel nut being threaded inside as well as on the
outside and then a regular nut on the outside wheel. I know that there is as
that what I've always had but it must also have a name or system to define it.

Still confused a little but getting better.
