Headlight upgrade-you gotta do this
Hello all,
Today, I did a serious upgrade of my FC headlights. I HIGHLY recommend that all you FC owners (or at least those of you with round headlights) do some or all of this upgrade. First, I bought some Xenon headlight units to replace the old sealed beams. I got mine here: http://store.racinglab.com/rodicutsebeh.html These are a direct plug-n-play replacement for your old sealed beams. I then installed headlamp relays as outlined by Mr. Burliss in the 'Files' section of this site ("Headlight Modification"). I got the relay units here: http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stor...t/Product? storeId=10101&Pr=p_Product.CATENTRY_ID% 3A2001333&productId=2001333&langId=-1&catalogId=10102 My headlights are now brighter than those on my new Chevy truck...they really light up the road in bright, white light. I cannot describe what a huge improvement this is over my old sealed- beams. I am not that great with wiring, and I was able to do the whole conversion in a couple of hours...someone who really knows what they are doing could knock this out in no time flat. Wow, Scott: Those look very good...Don't know if they would fit in my
1973 coach though. I wonder what those Boys with the Big Shiney Badges would say about these?? I bet they would fit...I think the headlight units were the same
across all the years (until they went to square). As for those shiny badges...these Xenon's come on lots of high-end cars now (BMW, Mercedes, Lexus) so I doubt they would ever bother me about it. I did notice the web page for this item does not mention a DOT
approval for these bulbs. In fact there is a disclaimer at the bottom of the page which warns some of their products are for off road purposes. Bmw offers a hid light or high itensity discharge light on their
vehicles it is much different than the bulbs you purchased The hid lites most often consume 35 watts of power compared to the standard 50 watts of power on a halogen or incandescent bulb the hid bulbs use a ballast to start the lights at a high voltage where a standard bulb use 12 volts the only difference between the bulbs you bought and a regular bulb is either the coating on the glass or the inert gas contained within the bulb or both. Headlight upgrade-you gotta do this
In order for Xenon lamps to be DOT street legal they must have the
following markings displayed on the lens "D1S", "D1R", "D2S" or "D2R" (depending on type of lamp design). Also the letters "DOT" should appear on the lens to indicate compliance to the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations. If these markings are not on the lens then they may not be used on public roads. I've been running European lights on my cars and coaches since ~
1978, have never had anyone question the legality regardless of the fact that they are not DOT approved. The easy way to not get in trouble is to keep them adjusted well, and if you're running over-legal-max wattage bulbs, keep them dimmed unless you're on open/empty road. The "look-at-me-blue" junk is annoying and no more effective, but might attract attention (or at least should) of your Highway Patrol however. The difference in lighting is very substantial, there is a reason that the antique US lighting is not legal in Europe, their standard kept up with technology when we made the sealed-beam our standard. The down-side of a European light in my experience is the very sharp cutoff not sending much stray light upward, so overhead signs are difficult to read. Takes some getting used to. They are far superior also in fog/snow/heavy-rain with less stray light to cause glare. European lights I recommend are the Cibie and Hella brands, normally referred to as European Conversion Lights and sold by many parts stores in sizes to replace all sealed-beam sizes (round and rectangular) and will plug in / mount where your original sealed- beams were with no changes other than aiming them properly. I am sure you already know that the markings D1S,D1R,D2S,and D2R are
the module number for the modules and has nothing to do with DOT admissability or compliance. These module numbers are used much the same as 9004 9007 9005 in standard bulbs for automotive application Just because the modules are stamped with this on the lens means nothing it just shows which module number to replace if it burns out On the other hand the DOT Stamp or imprint means a lot When using true HID the reflectors and bases must also be designed for the module they have a different beam pattern not the same as standard automotive bulbs either incandescent or halogen Using HID modules in a fixture not designed for such can cause injury to the owner or vision impairment to on coming traffic. Be careful when using hid modules and Ballasts High Voltage is present.
