Generator Muffler

[Jack & Donna Smith]

I need some ideas on a muffler for my Onan. I have a 5.5 gas Onan
that needs a new muffler. I contacted a muffler shop, and the guy
said he could fit one, and probably nay muffler with the right size
pipes would work. I want something that is quiet, and wonder if,
indeed, anything from a small car would work?

Jack, I have used a muffler designed for a VW beetle, the kind that replaces the
stock dual exhaust with a single muffler that went across the rear of the car,
it was very quiet. On another gas Onan, I used a muffler from a Thermoking
diesel truck refrigeration unit, also very quiet. No problems with either.
Bottom line is automotive mufflers work very well, but if you want quiet without
the unwanted heat and backpressure Gregory mentioned, always use a muffler with
a larger physical size than the original unit. In fact I would use the largest
muffler I could fit, just make sure it is a reverse flow unit, not straight
thru, and the exhaust will be the quietest part of your generator.
