Roof walkways
Many of the screw heads for the screws securing the walkways on the roof
are rusting. Does anyone have any recommendations for replacing these
screws?

1. Don't do it unless I am willing to pull everything off, installing
new rubber "runners" and completely redoing the installation of the
walkways?

2. Go ahead and replace the screws only with stainless screws and
sealant?

3. Modify the installation in some way because once the screws are
removed there is no way of getting them back in the same holes?

I'm being a little extreme with my options because I want to be sure I
do this right if I do anything.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would reccomend option Number 2, Brian -- remove screws and
replace with stainless and sealer. I say this because your Bird is
a '93. I believe your decking is diamond plate, and should last a
life time without requiring any maintanice.

My Bird' is a '78 and the decking material is galvenized metal,
which requires repainting when the old paint starts to peel off.

There is no way that you need to replace the rubber runners! My
rubber runners are 28 years old and are still in excellent
condition. I plan to repaint the galvanized decking, probably with
Rino Coating for pick up truck beds, and replace all fasteners with
stainless.

The original paint is starting to peel. However, after inspecting
the rubber runners, I will leave them in place -- they are
structually sound and perfectly functional.

That's my two cents.

James,

I agree with you that folks should replace the screws with new
stainless and use a good sealer. However are you sure that your
decking is galvanized? All of the FC's that I have ever seen are
covered with aluminum deck plate that does not require painting.
Someone may have painted yours for some reason but I would be
willing to bet that it is aluminum. Before you add the additional
weight of something such as "Rhino liner" take a look.....

I think you have the first model year with the diamond plate
decking. Birds' from 1979 and older had a corragated galvenized
metal deck that was painted by the factory with the base color of
the coach. I love the simplicity and reliability of my 1978, but I
wish it had the diamond plate instead of the metal deck. Perhaps it
may make sense for me to replace my decking material with the
upgraded diamond plate. I will look into that before painting.

Brian I have done a couple of these roofs. I've mentioned my method a couple of
times on the net so you should be able to find one of my old posts on it. If
not send me your phone number ( rrob at telus dot net)and a time and I'll give
you a call.
