Indirect Fluorescent Lighting...

I have two of my light fixtures, one mounted outboard on the over-
head storage compartment, and another one over the kitchen sink and
both are starting to work part time.

The bulbs are ok. At times they work fine, other times at a reduced
output, and the one over the sink will periodicaly take a vacation.

These fixtures look like they are original. There is a ballast?
encased in what looks like wax, several wires running around, a
fuse, and a large resistor looking thing. They look 28 years old.

I would like to replace the whole fixture with a modern replacement,
my old covers still look great.

Has anyone been here and done this before?

I appreciate any advice...

Thanks, JIm.

That is great info. I have found one of the fixtures in this bus has
been replaced. It is a more modern, tighter unit with no exposed
wires, transistors or fuses. It says, LSI - Annandale Minnesota - No.
F-15R - (For Use In Recreational Vehical Only)

I found this info after my first reply and before I read your
response:

fluorescent lamps in my 1980 FC had short life.
Real short. I found the problem was the inverters built into the
fixtures were the problem. The chassis, inverter, and sockets, as a
unit, is available from:

RGM Industries, Inc.

The cost is $35 each plus shipping. RGM doesn't use credit cards,
but will ship COD. I prefer to send them a check and save the COD
charges. The part number for the unit is 15RF12, but be sure to
specify you don't need the whole fixture, as there is no seperate
part number. The new inverters seem to be much better than the 18
year old inverters! No more short lived lamps.

I also have the ballasts for the flourescent lights. You will find
that the LSI listed on the lights is no longer in existence
If you need the pics on the rebuild of the lights Bob Griesel made a
series of pictures showing the rebuild procedure

Thanks, Jim and Stephen.

I have sent two fixtures to Thin-Lite in California to be rebuilt
for S23.50, seems like a great price. I will order a new unit from
RGM to carry as a spare and compare the two. I would be glad to
compare them on this forum when I get them.
