question about 82 FC35 3208T turbo

I'm looing an an 82 FC35 3208T. The turbo is located on the lower
left side of the engine visible from below. All the 3208T's I've seen
have the turbo at the center back of the engine. Is the location of
this turbo an indication it is an aftermarket turbo installed on a 3208NA?

Thanks. Drat! That's what I was afraid of. It's a funeral
invitation for that engine. The rest of the coach was in very good
shape. The NA must be underpowered for that coach.

I believe I have made a greater effort to bring an FC up to new mechanical specs
than most people are willing to abide by. My 'bird wants for nothing in running
gear competence. It's a dog. The engine is a sweet running 250 hp. with 10k
miles since I installed it. The pump is not encumbered with any emission
compromises such as the aneroid. The chassis is too heavy for the power, even
300 hp is going to be marginal in the mountains. If I were out west regularly,
and I am a native of Oregon, I'd need an 892 Detroit. There's a nice looking PT
38 @ birdconnection with the correct engine. I'm bumping my FC to 300 hp specs
and adding a driveline overdrive. It will be OK then but barely.
The NA block doesn't have the needed piston oilers for turbocharger duty, might
be OK in the flatlands not towing.

I felt that the turbo installation left things a bit vulnerable, such
as the oil line, also has the turbo housing stressed so that I question
the life expectancy of the bearings and oil seal, likely to leak oil
from the turbo housings.

Other than that, the correct turbo engine has the turbo mounted just
ahead of the bellhousing on the top of the engine, has oil sprays built
into the block to spray/cool the piston skirts, other changes include
roller lifters, a real turbo engine will much better handle the stress
of the turbo.

I believe that the coach you've looked at has also been re-ratioed with
taller rear-end gears, originally most '82s came with very short 5.29:1
gears.

Sounds like you know the coach. It originally came from Nevada and is
currently in Colorado. I don't know a lot about the differences
between Cat NA and Turbo but I'm pretty familiar with the differences
on Mercedes diesels. They too have oil squirters and hardened
crankshafts on the turbo models.

I've got a M-B turbo-diesel myself, the Deutch make fine little oil-
burners.

There are other significant differences between the '82 and '83 also
such as a driveline retarder so you don't have to crawl down grades
in first gear, ... you live in mountains so I'm sure you know what I
mean, probably good for around 200hp or better in braking.

Be careful comparing years, you'll find that BB added improvements
almost every year through the '80s and '90s that you just can't live
without once you look at the next newer year ;~)
