Fuel delivery on 3208 and coolant check questions

Kerry,
One or two hours will not heat the mass of the 3208. I usually turn mine on
the night before if we are leaving in the morning. If your fuel system is
tight and the batteries and wiring are good it should not be a problem to
start. Check the bleed valves. The one time I had a problem starting the
valve was not closes tight on the injector pump. We had a emergency last
year with my granddaughter and I started mine in -14 with no heat or ether.
I do keep additive in the diesel in the winter because we travel to Nebraska
and South Dakota. Fresh diesel makes a difference too. I will NOT use
ether and removed the ether systems from both the 3208 and the Perkins. I
keep a small Honda in one compartment in case I need help getting started.
Never had to use it except to make coffee when I did not want the noise of
the Perkins.

Thanks. It's my first non-glowplug diesel. Engine is a CAT
remanf'd. Block heater had been on for about between 1 and 2 hrs. It
was probably in the high 30's. Anyone use ether spray systems for
cold weather?

Good morning-



I'm not sure what kind of temperatures you are speaking about, but when
bringing my 'bird home from Georgia, it was in the low 20's the night
before.

The next morning I woke up to begin my trip home it was 27.(the ground was
frozen) I just knew that old 3208 CAT would not start-how was I going to
get her started in a hotel parking lot- Well, I turned on the key, and
waited about 15 sec, and she wired right up, without questioning it.



Every time since, she has fired right up.. (keep my fingers crossed)



Just my 2 cents

I wasn't thinking of using ether above zero, but in extreme
circumstances. I had my MB out a few weeks ago at 35 below and it
wouldn't start. It has no block heater. I wouldn't use ether on an
indirect injection diesel but it was my understanding it did no harm
on direct injection diesels. I used to operate a 1937 NorthWest
crane, and it was never started without ether.
Considering the fact that both the engine and generators are diesels
and we wild camp a lot, plugging in the diesels to start at low
temperatures is not always an option. So, I just want to develop
skills at low temperature starting. I can usually start my MB's with
no block heaters down to about 10 below without a problem.

Kerry your Kohler generator should have glow plugs.mine does. Start
the generator and then let it both charge up your starting batteries
(same as the house batteries) and then on the block heater. It should
start up within an hour maybe less. I have had no problem at all
starting my 3208NA in cold weather even when it got down close to 10
degrees. You have to have good compression and have it timed right however.
Remember the Mb has glow plugs so you need a good strong battery to
both power the glo plugs and then turn the engine over fast enough to fire.

I would not use ether in my Cat 3208NA even though I know it has been
done. If it should fire prematurely there is the possibility of bent
rods and worse.
