genset tripping off

genset tripping off
Hi all,
it's a warm sunny day (42 & rising) today so thought I should fire up
the "White Bird" and genset and bring them up to a good temp.
I have had the coach plugged in to 50 amp and had heat on so nothing
would freeze in the weather we've had.
Bird fired right up and is running smoothly as I write this. The genset
didn't want to start, the reset button was tripped. Pushed it in and it
took off and ran smoothly for about a minute. It doesn't seem to matter
if it is on the gen setting (on the switch by the step) or not. It will
start right up, sound fine for about a minute, then trip off.
The water, and oil are fine. It doesn't seem to move the needles on the
galley monitor when it is running and I hurry in to check, after
turning it to the gen position....
When it is on the 50 amp shore the needles are fine.
Thanks for you help, I'll be looking in archives. Mom & I were hoping
to go on a jaunt week after next....grrr...

Rose mary,

Does you generator battery have a full charge? I had a similar problem
once only to find out the battery had enough voltage to start the
generator, but not enough to keep the fuel solenoid operating.

genset tripping off
Hey there Rosemary, nice to "see" you again. Ahhh..The genset
questions.. You did not mention which genset you had in the coach,
but assuming it is a Perkins/Kohler.. a couple of questions. Did the
cooling fan run?? Generally it will if the genset is producing power
(240v). If not then there are some "other issues" The guages in the
galley may indicate that the genset is or is NOT producing power..if
the TRANSFER SWITCH..is set to something else..the guages will not
register power. That switch must be set to GEN to make the guages
work when on the genset. I have found back in the MAIN BREAKER PANEL
switches turned off and/or not set "just so" and they will prevent
the guages from working give then a good on/off cycle, do it with
authority when nothing is running. What was the oil pressure??
Did/does it register..if not the genset will shut down. The shut
downs are high temp, (prolly not the case) low oil pressure (maybe)
and as some have said not enough power in the batteries to keep
relays open/closed and not recieving the signal from the relays it is
running. The list starts, check circut breakers, check fuses,
(control box) maybe even a regulator. You can "trick" it into running
with taking a jumper from the starter solenoid (power) over to the
fuel solenoid. If it runs then something is NOT telling the genset it
is producing power...

While the Perkins/Kohler is a "good" unit the technology today has
come light years past it..We decided to replace our genset with a
brand new PowerTech genset and have not regretted it one bit.. I
starts runs and will for thousands of hrs. :>)

Best of Luck...
