1980 FC33 questions
Hello everyone
I have some questions on an 80 fc33 that I am considering. I have some conserns I hope to gain some knowledge on. Right now there is no power from the Kubota 10kw genset to the couch The couch has a Telma Retarder and a Jake brake This is an 1980 with a 3208 turbo. current owner ststes previous owner told him it came from factory that way Has been sitting for past year did put some algeside in fuel tank new belts are being installed along with radiator at shop. nonswing when I go to look at it I will take Harvey's checklist goat rails modifided oil and fluid change done regularly does have blue box and recor Hugh Turner Thomaston Ga 94 Jep GC possible 80 FC33 |

You want an electric couch??? I've heard of electric blankets, but
couches? Is the switch in the compartment just to the left of the entrance steps in the 'Gen' position or in the shorepower position? It could be as simple as that. Extremely unlikely to be an original engine. I'm pretty sure Cat was not turbocharging the 3208 in 1980 so it must be a later edition. The first year BB put the 3208T in was 83 I believe. If it is a retrofit, one thing to keep in mind is that the 3208NA ran a couple of hundred rpm's faster than the 3208T. As a result, there was a lower gear ratio in the rear end of the NA models than the turbo models (I believe). This means that a retrofitted 3208T will give you more power up thru the gears and climbing hills, but a lower top speed unless the governor has been turned up to allow higher rpm's that match the NA model, or the rear end gear ratio changed. I think turning up the governor will increase exhaust gas temperatures. 1980 FC33 questions
Kerry is correct. To the best of my knowledge, the first 3208Ta
installation is in the '83 FCs. Earlier ones would have been the 210hp Na (or in some rare instances the 190hp 3208Na Kalifornia version evident from the valve-cover sticker or the extra wires on the injection pump). The standard gear ratio of the Na coaches was 5.29:1 which wouldn't be tall enough for the 200rpm lower 3208Ta, plus the torque-converter is different from the non-turbo to the turbo models. Thank you for pointout the fact that I forgot that stupid"a". I thought I had read that the 83 was the first year that had the turbo.I did call Bernie at the plant today he told me if I could get the body or chassis number he would look it up and see what the it left the plant with. When I read what had been done he told me it sounded like it was an up grade for the better. If I get it i will have to remeber to turn the Jake of if we ever arrive late somewhere. I would never turn a diesel up to mas RPM it would not be worh what could come out of the side of the block. I do not know if the rear end chuck was changed or not I am not sure if present owner does or not. Does anyone live in the Houston area that is qualified to do the coach PDI or knoww anyone that is ? I have found ashop that can do the bus mechanical side. Kerry, I think this is a typical typo. We all can not be accomplished
typists. I think the intended message from Hugh is clear. The motor info is dead on..but to chastise someone for a typo?? I guess it is as rediculous as "recycleing grey water" hmmm ...or not taking the time to research their "couch" in the Blue Box or from the forum achives! Nuff said on this. Thank you I guess an electric couch could have many uses 1.for people you do not like strap them to it(electric chair only longer). 2 for those of us that consider it our second bed we cound install a thermostat for those chilly days.
