San Antonio to Georgia
In April we will be traveling to Georgia, to Unadilla, near Fort Valley. The
shortest route is through south Louisiana through Mississippi on I-10 but there is an alternate route through Shreveport and across I-20. When we went a few months ago we chose I-20 because storm damage was still severe. But now I wonder if roads and RV parks are rebuilt along I-10. It would be fun to go that route as we haven't been on it in some years. But is it okay now? Thanks for any heads up you can give. Joe Frost, 43' 2003 Wanderlodge. Joe,
From what I have been reading on the RV Newsgroups, I 10 is open, however, rebuilding is going slow. The bridge that came down is open to one lane traffic with delays. If you have plenty of time, use I-10, otherwise I recommend i-20. George Lowry '06 Alpine Apex - formerly '95 WBDA 4203 Spearfish, SD - heading for Pomona, CA FMCA in the morn. Joe, I-10 and all I-10 bridges are open and clear in Mississippi. Since all
of the Highway 90 bridges are gone in Mississippi(Ocean Springs West), all traffic now uses I-10 for local travel. It will remain this way for a couple of years until the new bridges are built. As for RV Parks, all of them I have seen are full of RVs of people working to rebuild the coast and people living in FEMA trailers (Many thousands of them). I suspect that South Louisiana is the same. This area will continue to be a disaster area for a long long time. San Antonio to Georgia
Joe- we just made the trip from Montgomery, Tx to Hammond, La. There is a lot of
construction around the Beaumont, Orange area. The roads from the state line east to Sulfur is bad. The rest of I-10, with the exception of Baton Rouge is good. If I had the time, I'd take I-20. San Antonio to Georgia
When we go to Mexia, Texas from Orlando, we take I-75 into Georgia
(for fuel) then get on US-84 West and take that the rest of the way. My wife just did that last week and said that there was no traffic and a 65 mph speed limit most of the time. She also took US-84 back into Louisiana then cut up to I-20 to spend this weekend in Atlanta. US-84 is divided 4-lane except when you get to Texas but I had a blast driving the 'lodge through the Texas hill country on the two lane section on our first long trip. If you have a little extra time, I would recommend it, it's a lot less stressful than the Interstate, especially through Louisiana. There were also plenty of campgrounds and parks on that route. The only real congested part of the trip is around Dothan, AL.
