Fuel $$ Savings

Hi All,

After attending the rally in Myrtle Beach (a great time by the way.
Kudos to Scott B and Judi!) I decided to give the whole speed reduction
thing a try. I usually run my Bird at around 70MPH (2000 RPM). Pulling
a 2004 Honda Pilot toad, we usually get between 4.9 and 5.2 MPH on the
highway. On my return trip last night, I decided to try keeping speed
between 60 and 65 and never flooring the accelerator pedal- just
moderately accelerating from stops, etc...

I topped off the tank at the Flying J in Latta, SC and again in
Hershey when I returned- the difference was incredible. On our return
trip, we logged an average of 6.6 MPG. What an increase!! :smile:
That translated to a savings of 24.7 gallons over 510 miles. At 2.39
per gallon- that's $59.32 in savings.

Hi Shane,

It sure makes a great difference when the coach is kept down to
a little over 60 mph. In the past 15K miles my mileage has averaged 6.5
mpg, ranging from 4.6 mpg (Albuquerque NM to Omaha NE by way of Durango CO
and Wolf Creek Pass) running 70+ mph on flats to 7.2 mpg on mostly flat
terrain (Springfield VA to Orlando FL) running 62-65 mph. Also noticed a
difference when I changed my Racor after it got into the red. Glad you had
a great time at rally, I sure wanted to go but my coach is still in shop for
PM fluid changes and looking into installation of Jacob's engine brake.

Don't get too excited. You need to check that mileage over a longer
period of time. The difference in filling the tank each time you stop
can make several gallon difference. I have records over a period of 8
years and It is very rare when I have managed to get that kind of
mileage. For the 8 years, I am at 5.5 mpg with all kinds of driving
speeds, conditions and always towing at least 3500 pounds.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for throwing down the gauntlet :-) Guess it will be my
mission in life to maintain better than 6 MPG- but I'm sure you're
close to the mark given all driving conditions and not just
interstate travel. In any event, I was amazed at the difference.
After 8 K miles cross country last summer I thought that 4.9 to 5.2
MPG was all that I could hope for. Now I can shoot for something
better.

Shane,

2 years ago, I ran 5,600 miles thru New Orleans to Los Angeles,
vegas and back to Spfld, IL. My overall mileage pulling a Jeep
Wrangler(3,400#, auto trans a/c hard top) was 6.4. kept cruise set
below 65 mph.

Ran 68-72 mph home from S. Padre Island Texas, got 5.

Speed certainly makes a difference on my 6V92!
