As Bill said, Diodes can be checked with an ohm meter.
What you are looking for is a forward-to-back ratio in the meter reading, the higher the better. This is necessary as the diode will only pass current in one direction. In most all cases it must be (electrically)removed from the circuit for a true reading. forward-to-back is simply reversing the leads of the meter.
